Default Bass Drum porting assistance needed

Hello, I have searched through many porting threads without a solution to a unique situation.

I currently have a 5" port on a 22" drum and I like the sound and feel. So just under 20" of open area.

I am doing a new photohead and would like to incorporate 5 x 2.25 " holes which would be close to the same area.

No mic's are needed. Will this completely ruin the sound? Thanks.

well, the more holes in the front head, the less resonance you're going to get from the shell. Some guys record without a front head at all because they like the sound so it all depends on what sound you want. I've seen reso heads with 5 holes, mic'ed up and sounded great.

When you do it, photoshop out the air valve - it's ugly and ruins the look IMO (so does the OZ logo)

Good idea on the valve. I like the OZ log though.

OK, like the no stem thing! Thank you. Kept the OZ and added a touch of "Pearl".

It won’t ruin the sound it’ll just change the sound. I prefer no hole if I’m playing an un-mic’d gig. Some people prefer the sound of a vented front head mic’d or not.

Can you use black dots to look like ported holes.

Have tried a few combinations of heads, sealed and ported. I like the ported better. Seems to have a tighter ThwumP.

I would imagine there is also a great range of sound depending on the quality of the drum. I only have a Vision maple kit. ( should have noted that in the beginning)

I bet that the range of tuning/head options on the high end units are completely different.

Had to go back to the drawing board.

Looks like dog spit covering the whole head on the drum Shrunk it down to give the appearance of a tire, so the holes shrunk too. I'll just cut the 5 holes in an old head and try it.
