    Default restoring my dads drumset

after my dad passed away due to complications with pulmonary fibrosis me being the only other drummer in our family it was decided i should keep his drumset. this was the same set he taught me on so i wanted to freshen it back up and put some life back in her so i went to work breaking everything down and cleaning the rust off the lugs.

when i broke the kit down i found a big crack by one of the spur mounts

i have decided to remove the black wrap and stain them blue which was his favorite color

this is my first attempt so if please be gentle with me if im doing something wrong

after repairing the crack i soaked all the lugs in Coca-Cola, which may sound weird but it actually worked. after soaking for a couple hours i scrubbed them with aluminum foil under warm water and set them to dry for a couple days

then after the glue was dry i began removing the old glue for the wrap, sanding and filling in some spots with wood filler

after filling in the spots, sanding with 80, 120, 320 i tapped off the bearing edges and began the staining process. after i stained them i thought they were still missing something so it was kinda last minute thing

i built a lazy susan turntable and bought some Rustoleum black lacquer and attempted a black fade from the bottom up

after drying for a couple days i used a couple coats of clear to give some shine and began the process of reassembling. i had to order new vent grommets since i pretty much destroyed the old ones removing them. they were the press in type

i went with brass grommets to give some more color however when i installed them i felt they were still missing something. i went to the hardware store and picked up some black neoprene washers for the outside to add to the color and some metal ones for the inside so the nuts are not digging into the wood

next i cleaned the threads on the tension rods and the lugs. i bought some white lithium grease to lubricate the threads

i put some cotton balls inside the lugs to isolate the springs inside from resonating when the drums are hit

after that i bought some new heads. went with Remo Ambassadors coated for batter and clear for resonate and Powerstroke III for the bass drum. for the snare i went with a Controlled Sound for batter and Snare Side for the bottom

i left all the hoops black to keep the color there

    drums all re assembled

i left the snare alone and just replaced the heads since i was afraid with the stain/fade its would look bad with the shallow shell

i went with a snare stand to mount the 12 tom since i was afraid the extra weight would stress the repaired crack. there was also a 13 inch tom which i didnt do anything with since he never used it and talked about removing it anyway

Good on you - great way to honour his memory.

What songs are you thinking of covering?

My dad has always said "when I go, don't let them give me a big funeral. Just cremate me and drop me in the ground with a pair of sticks."
"I'm gonna sleep outside... it's like Earth here, except less pollution, and more moons"
