The nicest sounding wood snare is probably my Pearl Masters MHX.
It's not the most versatile, as it really only sounds good in the medium to lower registers, but when you dial it in, it's got some wow factor.
The most versatile one I own currently is my SLP G Bubinga and I love that snare. I think it really needs an undampened single ply head on it, but otherwise it sounds killer.
One of my favorites was a DW Performance Series snare that I owned for a bit. I'll give DW tons of flack for other things, but they can make one hell of a snare drum. You can tune it all over the place, and even go up pretty high with it before it'll choke. My other DW that I've had for a bit is a collectors oak, and while it's nice, it only sounds good in certain situations. Doesn't record all that well, which is surprising for an oak drum.
