Default Help me spot MRP from MCX

I'm going to try a couple of used Masters kit, 6 ply maple.

The owner is not sure if it's MCX or MRP, I know that in the beginning the hardware was different, then MRP was discontinued and MCX updated, so if you can help me I will thank you.

Also, if you can provide any insights on sound quality differences from the two I will be grateful.

    Here a couple of pics.

    Yours looks to be MCX.

Masters Premium (either Maple or Birch) will have the following badge that says PREMIUM on it.

I'm already in the Master army with an MMX!!
I'm shopping for a simpler kit with 16x16 floor tom (with legs) and toms mounted on kick.

The color of my pics is lacquer or wrap?

The more I look at it, the less I'm convinced of the look of the bass drum rings not finished on the inside.

Your pics are Lacquer I think it’s called a Black Sparkle Fade 6ply Maple My Masters Premium is Diamond Burst 4ply Maple w 4ply Maple re-rings Lacquer. I recently sold a MRX with Tom mount bracket and it worked well for small venues and the only reason was I found a MHX Masters Mahogany Kit. The MCX had clear finish on the bass drum hoops. I didn’t like the look I always thought solid color has always looked better in the older Masters series MRX,BRX MMX,MHX.

As skeld-the-wicked pointed out, yours is indeed a lacquer. Color 363 Black Sparkle Fade.

MRP and MCX were essentially the exact same thing. Same shells, same drum hardware, and if you preferred standard configurations, same sizes.

The Premiums were really more of a continuation of the original Masters line with the rectangle badges, while the MCX got you a more standard option for a lot less. The differences were the different Opti-Mounts on the Premiums (they were aluminum and matched the hardware finish), while the MCX's were the old steel ones that had been used for about a decade at that point. Both work equally as well, just one is more aesthetically pleasing than the other.

The Badge was also a little different, as it said "Premium Maple" on the MRP, and "All-Maple Shell" on the MCX.

What you have is an MCX in Black Sparkle Fade, and it's an incredibly nice finish. I remember when those first came out and they had Lime, Black, and Orange sparkle fades, along with the Diamond Glitter wrap. Really cool time in Pearl's history.
