Default Did / do you get support?

As drummers we love drums and drumming. Noisy cymbals, clanky cowbells & a hi hat with a souped up tempo.

As for our loved ones and neighbors, they may not live the drums so much.

So my questions are...in pursuit of you drum dreams and goals ...

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)

    7. Years you've been playing?

I'm interested to see, what's left of the PDF members, have been through in your years of drumming?

    Great idea for discussion

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?

Yes. Though my parents didn’t send me to drum lessons due to where we lived, they did send me to both music camp and college. They have come to see me perform from time to time.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?

Don’t have any, but my cousin is always interested in what I was doing.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?

My wife is amazing. There are not many that can handle their husband leaving on tour for nearly 5 weeks 2 two days after their honeymoon or be in a band with only women for 10+ years.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?

No, though my second kit was my lifesaving. My first kit would have been something you’d trash pick today.

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?

Other than when I lived in an apartment in BKLYN where I played 5 hours straight on my new V-Drums kit, no.

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)

All bands exchange ideas from my experience, some extremely more than others.

    7. Years you've been playing?

Too long to be as mediocre as I am.

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?
Mostly no, but my grandmother was really supportive, may she rest in peace.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?
    No.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?
    Yes, thankfully.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?
    Yes, but it was crap.

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?
Of course, but I don't really care.

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)
They do, but I do too.

    7. Years you've been playing?
    25 already.

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?
Yes, my parents have always given me their full support. My dad was a drummer so I get it from him.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?
    I'm an only child.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?
My wife also supports me unconditionally. She's a classically trained percussionist with degrees in teaching and performance. It's awesome to have her behind me no matter what I do musically, and to offer the same support to her.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?
Nope, my parents bought it for me during that early 2000s custom Keller kit boom, so they unfortunately overpaid, but it's still my only kit (other than vintage Ludwig orphans).

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?
    Never had any complaints.

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)
The singer in one of my groups does and it drives me crazy. It's incredibly disrespectful.

    7. Years you've been playing?
    About 20.

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?

Yes. My parents never complained about my brother and I drumming in the basement.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?

Watching my older brother drum helped to motivate me.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?

This would be a huge yes! My wife was my roadie for 25 years of drumming at church. She also has financed my barn restoration, and all my drum gear.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?

No. It was all cheap stuff from the second hand store that my dad purchased. We didn't have very much money growing up.

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?

Growing up they never complained, and now I don't have any to worry about.

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)

    Not for long.

    7. Years you've been playing?

    50 years, off and on.

Cool topic, thank you for posting this. Here are my responses:

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?

Overall, yes. Both my parents were music teachers so they supported me playing music. My dad specifically told my uncle NOT to get me a drum set, so of course he did exactly that for Christmas right before I turned 2 years old. To my dad's credit, he didn't make me get rid of it, and he allowed my uncle to get me a better set when I was 6. My dad just asked that I also learn a non-percussion instrument so I took up trumpet and eventually guitar.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?

I don't have any biological siblings, but a very close friend of the family lived with us for many years when I was growing up and he became like a big brother to me. He told my mom when I was about 13 "You need to get this kid a real set, he's good" which lead to me getting my first full sized kit. He's a guitar player so we'd jam together all the time when he lived with us.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?

Yes, I'm always very up front about my drumming because I've done it my whole life. I told every woman I've ever dated "If you ever ask me to pick between you and drumming, it's going to be drumming, I'm never giving that up." Everyone I've been with has been a musician themselves so they generally understand and my ex-wife came to pretty much ALL my gigs over the 12 years we were together. Our divorce didn't have anything to do with my drumming, in fact we bought the house we bought because it had a practice space in the basement for my bands.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?

No, my first three kits came before I was 14 so I didn't have any money at that point. The first was homemade, the second was purchased by my uncle, and the third was purchased by my mom. The first time I bought a kit was around age 16 when I bought my vintage Ludwig set.

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?

Nope. I've always lived in houses that weren't attached to anything else and I've had space to play. When I was really little I had my kit in my bedroom but since then I've always had a dry (mostly) basement to keep my drums in so you can't really hear them outside of the house. In my current house, I asked my neighbor once if the band was a problem and he was like "Band? What band?"

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)

Absolutely not. To be totally honest, I've had 4 or 5 different band mates tell me "You're the best drummer I've ever played with" and a few told me I was the best they ever heard which is of course ridiculous. I laughed at those guys and loaned them some Buddy Rich DVDs.

    7. Years you've been playing?

I guess about 34 years at this point.

    1. Did you get support from a parent or guardian?
Yes. And they put up with the noise whenever I practiced, though they'd flash the lights when there was a phone call and I needed to stop for its duration.

    2. Did your siblings offer help or support?
In a roundabout manner. My parents got my brother an entry-level kit as a gift one year, but, like many, he gave it up when he quickly realized it wasn't what he expected. To prevent them from going to waste, I picked up the sticks. Actively, eh. They put up with the noise.

    3. Does/ did a spouse or significant other offer support / encouragement ?
My partner doesn't really get the opportunity to offer support. Though they say I'm fine to play whenever, I only play when they're at work and I have the house to myself.

    4. Did you buy your first kit with your own money?
The kit I began learning on was technically a gift to my brother, so 'not with my own money' on that account. However, my first kit that was entirely mine, yes.

    5. Do your neighbors complain about your drums?
Not when I lived in my parent's detached house, nor now that I'm in my own detached house. The downstairs neighbours in one of my old apartment buildings complained a whole lot about the the stomping coming through their ceiling when I play my e-kit.

    6. Do your band mates complain about you drumming? ( offer advice on how to play)
Not currently in a band, though no. Not ever.

    7. Years you've been playing?
    18-20 years now?
