When I was a kid, I didn't know that 'God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You' was an Argent song, or 'Nothing Compares 2 U' was a Prince song, or even 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door' was originally a Dylan song (or 'All Along The Watch Tower' for that matter)

Anyway, I put all the above as examples of covers better than the original. I also add

'Death Walks Behind You' - Paradise Lost (originally Atomic Rooster)
You Really Got Me' - Van Halen
'Whiskey in the Jar' / 'Breadfan' / 'Turn the Page' / 'Loverman' / 'Stone Cold Crazy' - Metallica (Thin Lizzy / Budgie / Bob Seger / Nick Cave / Queen)
'Hurt' - Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails)
'All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You' - Halestorm (Heart)
'Get Lucky' - Halestorm (Daft Punk)
'Stronger' - 30 Seconds to Mars (Kanye West)
'Hackensack' - Katy Perry (Fountains of Wayne)
'Man Who Sold the World' - Nirvana (David Bowie)
'Live and Let Die' - Guns N' Roses (Wings)
    'Word Up' - Gun (Cameo)

I'm sure there's more, but that's top of my head

some good ones there. Cash doing rusty cage is good too.

Maybe the goo goo dolls give a little bit

edit: I should take out the "maybe" on this one; makes me sound wishy-washy.

Yes! Came here to add The Clash take on "I Fought The Law" specifically, but both of these covers are awesome.

I'll also add that I prefer the Lauren Hill version of Frankie Vallie's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You."
