    Default Reference Pure

Thinking about stepping up to a Reference Pure kit in satin walnut, anyone out there play one of these? What are your thoughts on these drums? Someday I would also love to have a masterworks kit built for me, I was thinking 6 ply shells with 2 inner plys of either gumwood or mahogany and 4 outer plys of birch. It's fun to dream sometimes

My brother from Massachusetts, I need you to hold onto your kits for longer than a few months!!! You will never be happy with anything you ever own!

I can't imagine this habit is good for your wallet.

Fun fact, I had a severe world of warcraft addiction. I got counseling and got over it! I suggest you do the same.

Obviously Ref pures are amazing but just ask yourself how long are they gonna last in your house until something else catches your eye? Do you want to keep doing this for the rest of your life?

    Ask yourself...

You are probably right, but you have to admit..... The Pearl reference pure in walnut stain and tube lugs looks fricking cool.

    Cuznred,

My Masterworks kits are done in the original Reference Pure specs and they sound great. The drums are light too.

If I ever did a masterworks kit, it would be birch mahogany with mahogany as the inner plies, 6 ply shells with double 45 edges. In a matte walnut stain w/ tube lugs and original pearl mounts.

I like the Matte Walnut too, but I did my most recent one in the Matte Black finish (like the MCT drums). That is my favorite.

They just arrived a couple of weeks ago, but the weather outside won't allow for pictures yet. I'll get some in the spring.

Ref's are definitely great drums, but honestly any high end drum is going to sound great. The only one's that I've played that I felt just totally out there from everything else were the Yamaha Live Customs. I feel like with any other drum in that range especially with Pearl, you could pull a lot of sounds out of them with just different heads and tuning. I really feel like Pearl, Tama, and Yamaha are the ultimate "utility" kits, in that they don't have the personality that DW, Gretsch, and Ludwig have, and that head selection goes a long way on them. That's not meant to be a bad thing as I own Pearl and Tama kits. I like that about them. So you have to ask yourself if buying a Ref Pure is really going to sound 10x better than the Masters kits you're currently playing, when really you might find the changes in them to be very slight, especially if you're using clear heads. If it were me I'd just stick with what I have.

That being said, it's your money and although I question someone who goes through gear that quickly, we're not on here to be Dave Ramsay. So if you want the Ref because you want it and you've got the money to throw around to do it, who the heck am I to judge?

CUZNRED - It's ultimately up to you, but I seem to recall you purchasing new kits around tax time with your tax refund? Am I correct?

If so, what about saving a few years' worth of those returns and then pull the trigger on some Masterworks?
