15” snare drums have a deeper, beefier sound. They easily provide that powerful ballad sound, if that’s a sound you like. When I play mine, I sit back a bit, for comfort.

Default Ludwig LB417BT 14x6.5 Smooth Shell Brass on Brass Black Beauty Snare Drum

This is probably the drum that I use more than any other. If I'm asked about my favorite drum, I prefer not to answer, but if I am pressed to, it's the Black Beauty. This drum has a Black Nickel Brass shell with all brass hardware including L1410BB diecast hoops, P2253HMB tube lugs, and the P86 Millennium throw-off.

Beautiful drum, but I'm not a fan of the shorter lugs.

I prefer the way Pearl's version uses the longer lugs on the deeper shell.

I don't mind the lugs on this drum, but the Imperial lugs on the 8" deep Ludwig metal snares look a little funny to me.

I presume you notice the difference between the diecast hoops that come on a Black Beauty, and the hoops you get with a Black Magic or the CP signature snare. The hoops you get with the BM and CP are WorldMax parts, where the hoops you get on a Black Beauty or special-order Supraphonic are more like Gretsch/Pearl diecast hoops.

The Black Magic drums are nice for the money, and I got some killer deals on the import Ludwig drums I have or I wouldn't have them. That said, Ludwig's USA metal drums are on a different level.

This drum was available from 1990 to 1996. It has a 1-Ply (7.5mm) Maple shell with triple-flanged hoops, RL55 lugs, and S012 throw-off. The 5.5" version of the custom classic came with 8 lugs while the 6.5" version came with 10.

This drum was released in 2011 and clearly pays homage to the Steve Ferrone signature snare that was discontinued several years earlier when he left Pearl's artist roster. Like the Ferrone snare, it has a black nickel Brass shell with Superhoops, TB65 tube lugs, and SR017 throw-off. It is also very similar to the current brass Sensitone that was released in 2014 with the only differences being the badge and throw-off.
