the reference ''original recipe''' is among the best high end sounding drum kit on this planet. seriously. reference means : volume, power,a unique voice-tone perfectly balanced from tom to tom. really, pearl re invented the wheel with the refrence concept. i own a reference wood snare, and i'd so like to find a complete kit at the right price....but people who bought a reference kit keep them, they're rare on the resale market.

in my opinion ,the reference is a good IDEA , but wish people would try there own ideas out .
for example in the normal "formula" has the 12 inch tom as the "reference" tom (what i mean, is the 12 is the only all maple drum ,i.e. the reference point in the tonal spectrum ) i like to see some masterworks customer try out changing the reference tom
.. say you set the reference tom to 14 ...that changes the formula for ALL the rest of the drums on your kit, so the 12 become a maple birch blend , the 10 becomes more birch i think that means the 6,and the 8 might be all birch .. cosmetically i gets rid of that annoying issue of the 13 and 14 inch toms being dark brown , also you could go up the spectrum too, and start the reference tom at 10 ..
i just think its kinda of a not thought of option

another thought, where does gum wood fall in the tonal spectrum? that could reeally change things up

i've had to play on a large ref kit extensively, for like an hour,a little bit more, and i've been amazed on how it sounded...and kit was double plies headed from top to bottom.i can imagine the power exiting those drums with single ply heads. also, the transition from the smaller toms to the larger toms was special. the 12 was the transitional drum.....maybe it was just me though.
