Good observation . Using the L80 alloy makes them both durable and cheap to produce.

being that that you're only for a trashy whit noise sound, or, a really loud chic sound, it was ideal choice ...this one time the price for the alloy may have been an unexpected bonus

I think Zildjian discovered a good thing with the L80 cymbals because the probably started out putting a lot of holes in B12 or B20 cymbals and then realized that they weren't durable enough. When they came up with the L80 alloy that could take a beating, they probably also realized that it was a lot cheaper to make. Win-Win situation for everyone.

I use the Agean Silent cymbals (which are made of ordinary B20 alloy) and they sound much better than the L80s, but I wouldn't use them for heavy crashing because they are more susceptible to cracking.

Tama apparently is doing an SLP steel kit. Dave's Drum Shop (Canada) on Facebook had this picture of a 4PC kit at a Preview show for Tama products.

Interesting. I've noticed a number of other companies doing kits with all aluminum or brass shells too.

I would imagine that the metal toms would sound a bit like surdos and timbales. They might be kind of heavy to carry too.

I saw these recently in a European drumming publication. Very nice looking snare drums.
