Supposedly the snare Grohl used on Nevermind was an 80's Tama Bell Brass.

MM I have known the bell brass is really bronze but is the Reference brass really brass? If so, then that makes sense - I've always assumed it was bronze also. (I'm preparing for a face in hand moment . . . )

Yes, the price I paid was high since I got married (my wife bought it for me for our 20th anniversary), but it was well worth it. However, she got a great deal on it.

The Reference snare drums are brass, not bronze. Bell bronze has a distinct color. It is not yellow like brass.

I may have a suggestion for you but the cost might be slightly above what you are willing to pay. What is your budget limit?

This is a true cast Bell Bronze shell and bronze hoops. This is from the manufacturer who made the Tree Bronze snares. The one Danny Carey uses. They offer Tree Bronze and Aluma Bronze. This one is Aluma Bronze. There is no difference in sound but the Tree Bronze is slightly darker in color and somewhat more difficult to achieve a successful casting. They mostly have that sorted out now though. The cost is FAR below what the Tamas are selling for. Variables consist of what strainer, lugs and hoops you choose. They will cut the bearing edges and drill all of the holes for you. The hoops are amazing. The drum is fantastic.

Beautiful drum. I don't care for the bronze hoops myself, but it definitely makes this drum unique.

Thank you for all your input so far! So far it seems like the DW Knurled Bronze is the way to go, but open to other suggestions still.

That's a very fine drum, can you tell me more about price and who makes it? Any sound clips?

Have a look at the Van Kleef drums made here in the UK, very bespoke, using all manner of metals (including bronze) and also offering their own design of hoops, lugs, throw, etc. Very nice drums, and extremely well made.

If you truly want “Bell Bronze”, be sure it has about 25% tin in it. If it doesn’t, it’s just marketing BS.
