Wow that's beautiful.... and you dont even have your cymbals set up yet... at 1st I thought you had a single double beater pedal. Then I realized your showing us your master piece and didnt connect the other pedal. I'd love to hear it once you've finished tuning it. Are you changing the heads or keeping the ones that came with it? Those heads remind me of Remo's single pinstripe head. Awesome investment... you shouldnt have any regrets as this kit is amazing. Besides you could go Terry Bozio and just get a second set of rack toms to go above the ones you have lol. You still have options ya know? Adding on isnt always a bad thing.

    Cuznred,

Keep in mind, you can easily replace the bass drum hoops on the MCT Matte Black kit with Pearl 1.5" Competitor Matte Black marching bass drum hoops. They are 6-ply maple, matte black finish, and match beautifully. They look better because they are finished all the way around.

I'm using the 14" hoops for my MCT "Martini" bass drum in the Matte Black finish. Just waiting for the Pearl logo head for the front of the bass drum and it will be ready to go.

Please don't take this offensively Cuz, but did you ever ask advice on tuning them? I can't imagine these drums not sounding musical!

I've been following your experience with MCT since I got mine some months before. I found the mounted toms to be quite resonant with Evans G1 top and bottom. I know you had some issues early on but seemed to like them later. Are you getting rid of all three sets?

I keep thinking I want to move up to Reference because human nature (mine at least) seems to demand; get the expensive ones, but whenever I sit down to play I do smile with these MCT. I don't mean to offend, like others have said, but maybe keep one set and continue to tune.

In the course of experimenting with heads I put on a set of Evans, choke, choke, Hydraulics on all the toms and they honestly still sound good with more of a thud but those maple shells really sound through.

Good luck, thank you for honestly sharing your experience with the PDF!

Even though I have several Masterworks kits, I worked with the MCT series recently and they sound great.

Also, drumheads are so good nowadays that almost any kit is going to sound good with the right heads.

There are some options available through Masterworks that I like, but they don't sound twice as good (considering the price). As you alluded to, I think some of it for me is just the pride of owning the top of the line kits.

I use Emporer Coated on top of both with Renaissance Ambassador on the bottoms and they sound great. However, it may just be the sound I like.

You might have different expectations. It always going to be personal taste, to a degree.

I agree on the natural maple finish. Beautiful for sure! I had an MMX kit back in the 90s in the 4 ply version. The shells were really warm and resonant and had a great sound for small rooms and if miked up but unfortunately they didn't have enough horsepower for outdoor gigs which I was doing a lot of at the time so I regretfully sold them. My Yammy MCs were also in this finish. AWESOME drums that I wish I had kept (if they weren't so heavy to schlep to gigs!)
