That is really cool! I didn't even know what a Mondo snare was until now. After seeing a few videos, I realize that is a fantastic addition to your set-up. I am glad it all came together for you.

    RG,

    Thanks.

Remo discontinued them a while ago so you don't see them around very often. There was a time when Remo actually made several different sizes of these snare drums along with an entire "Mondo" drum kit (including a Mondo bass drum).

Their version didn't have a high quality shell or snare mechanism, so this Masterworks version is considerably nicer all around.

Crazy direction. Glad it worked out for you. What did the drum look like when Pearl sent it to you?

    Dale,

    Thanks.

The Pearl shell was just ordered as a 12.x5.5 singled-headed 10mm concert tom with STL-150 lugs. I flipped it over and fused in the upper section of the Remo drum to accommodate the mondo head.

I had to drill some additional holes for the custom lugs, the strainer, and the badge. I also did the snare beds.

I had no idea you did that much. Do you have any pictures before your customization?

It was not easy to put this together. I had to get Remo to make me a one-off custom Mondo snare drum (only to be chopped up for parts). Then, I had to wait 4 months for the Masterworks shell and hope that I ordered the right thickness to enable me to fuse it with the upper portion of the Remo insert.

It had the potential to become an expensive "fail" if it didn't work out.

Why did you have to buy an entire other snare and not just a replacement head for their congas?

    Hi Dale,

    I'm sorry, I don't. I didn't document the process.

    Dale,

The reason is because it is necessary to use the upper portion of the Remo acousticon shell that has the rounded "conga" bearing edge for seating the mondo head. A mondo head is not the same diameter as an ordinary drum head.

If you look at the photo of the bottom of the drum, you can see where the black part of the Remo shell has been fused with the Masterworks shell on the inside. This is also what makes the black section you see on the outside of the drum between the mondo head and the top of the Pearl shell.

The upper portion of the mondo shell still had to be routed in order to slide it into the top of the Pearl shell.

    Thanks for the explanation.
