Peart has always been my drumming hero but the man swung like a steam hammer.

No exaggeration. I remember a documentary where Peart was being interviewed, and he nonchalantly broke through a (presumably) new bass drum head. I closest I ever came to breaking a bass drum head was I broke 1 ply of a pinstripe batter. I taped it up with duct tape and played it for another year. He probably broke heads routinely.

    Here's that footage Matt:

Probably only broke it because it's one of the DW kits at Drum channel, so will have been taking a daily hammering, with no head changes until needed.
Pearl, Natal, Ludwig, Tama, Slingerland, Premier Drums
    Zildjian, Sabian, Zyn Cymbals
PEARL, LUDWIG, TAMA, YAMAHA, NATAL and DW Snares

Roland, Dauz, FAT KAT and Koby Electronics, and loads of Percussion

4 Kits and 8 Snares, and I still don't have enough!

That's it. Also, no reinforcement patch. He was really going at it there.

Single ply too by the looks of it. So it was really bound to happen at some point.

Peart was legendary for a lot of reasons and one of them was how insanely hard he hit.

Speaking of him- anyone have any idea if the guy’s even still alive? Talk about doing a DB Cooper! The dude literally fell off the grid.

I don't think he's really been on the grid, other than "going to work", for a long time. The only difference now is, he's not performing anymore.

No, he was most certainly "on the grid" when he was performing. Interviews, books, magazine articles and updating his website every couple of months.

If you go with self taught just make sure that you don't ingrain bad habits into muscle memory. It took me a few years of real dedication to unlearn flaws in my technique that had they been noticed in my formative years, would not have materialized.
