Here are a couple of photos of the Masterworks 15x13 "Ballad Snare" that I finished this past weekend and added to my kit. I chose the 15x13 size because my main kit has floor toms in 14x12 and 16x14 sizes. The drum is very responsive and has a deep, fat tone (especially when compared to my my standard size snare drums that are tuned higher).

    Size: 15x13

    Finish: ES Comet Sparkle

Shell: Thin ply, blended, Mahagony/Maple, medium snare beds

Batter side: Fat Tone, 8 holes, Powerstroke 3 Coated w/Dot

Snare side: Fat Tone snare side (custom), 8-holes, Ambassador Snare Hazy

    Strainer: SR-1000 complete, SN1520I wires

    Lugs: STL-150

    Rods: SST-5047

Was it an easy decision to go with the legs instead of any other option? What led you to decide on that option?

    Mattj,

I wanted it to be of the "ballad snare" type (which usually have floor tom legs." This also make it easier to position the large drum (especially on the left side of the kit where there are no other stands.

One reason I chose the 15x13 size is because I have 14x12 and 16x14 floor toms with legs to it looks nice and proportional with those sizes.

    Hi MusicMan,

Do you have any recordings of this ballad snare and your other drum projects?

I am interested in hearing the fruits of your labour.

    Hi,

Unfortunately, I don't make any videos.

All the recordings I have are with drums at the churches were I play. I don't bring my own equipment anymore.

I see. You did mention your time and social restraints somewhere previously.
It would be great to hear samples on SoundCloud or some other platform, though!

    Thanks for your response.

So, I was browsing for something in the Pearl 2019* catalogue and came across this - which I thought might interest you: That odd looking floor tom. That's right, a factory-made Ballad snare (I am little bit late in my observation, hahah).

I wonder if Pearl is going to offer these as a standalone Reference / Reference Pure - maybe even Limited Edition - piece. That would be an innovative direction to take.

On another note: does anyone know what size this Ballad snare is?

You could be right about that.

I was thinking it looks like either a 14x10 or 15x11.

Would be convenient if Pearl added sizing information in their catalogues.

    Hi,

Yes, the one in the picture is a 14x10 "floor snare" drum made through Masterworks. You can always order these and various sizes are available (besides the 14x10).

You just have to know the limitations of the hoops for different sizes. For example, a 15" or 16" "floor snare" would have to use a 10-lug Super Hoops whereas a 14" or 13" "floor snare" could used either Fat Tone hoops or Super Hoops.

The 15x13" floor snare pictured in the ES Comet Sparkle finish was actually ordered as a regular 8-lug floor tom and then I later drilled the bottom hoop and added the snare beds and strainer system myself so that I could use the Fat Tone hoops to match the rest of my kit.

    Interesting. Thanks for this information.

With regard to the hoops: how would MasterCast hoops affect the compatibility?

Do bearing edges, lug type, and strainers also affect limitations?
