Hey guys. around August, i deceided id start to learn to record on my own, as we put an album out last year that just didnt do it for me or my bandmates. I started with a little Focusrite 2i4 and electronic drum kit, and quickly realized the E kits cymbals werent doing it for me. So i sold off some guitars and action figures that i had, upgraded my interface and added another 8 channels for a total of 16 inputs available, and started to piece together some drum mics. Well i have my first decent track out of all of this, a song from my band Curse Them called Blessed Be. I then had it professionally mastered at a studio out of akron. It isnt perfect, and reecording and mixing drums is a real challenge, but im happy with the results thus far. The only sample replacement is a trigger on the kick drum, and i did NOT quantize or time align. The drums are as i played them in one take, and then processed with a gate, EQ and compression. Be warned, it is screaming metal, but the im really happy about the snare sound i achieved (its my masterworks snare.) check it out and let me know what you think! https://soundcloud.com/user-203457440/blessed-be-master

Really nice sound, and excellent drumming. Are your kicks triggered? What snare do you have cranked like crazy?

Yes its triggered. But the sample i used is of my actual kick drum that was professionally made in the same studio i had it mastered in. And thats my masterworks snare. Its not cranked at all believe it or not. In fact its just below medium tension. I scooped the mids on it and gave a little boost to the high end to help it cut. I rimshot every hit thats not a blast beat or fill so it gives the illusion of a higher tension than it actually sits at. I used to crank my snares like crazy, but my getting old wrists dont like that very much anymore!

Very good metal drumming! Hihat is a bit too high in the mix for my liking and the toms lack some definition, but overall sounds very nice, especially for a home recording.

Yea i made a mistake with my compressor (smash and grab) and my mics when i tracked werent optimal. Ive now got all my toms switched to SM57s, and a beta 57 on my snare. So hopefully, it can only get better from here. My actual mix has much less hi hat, but my buddy that mastered it said he wanted to give the track some air, so he brought up the high end on the track, which of course brought out the hi hat. Its gonna be that trade off. But again, everything i do and everything anyone else does to help me, is a lesson learned.

And i completley understand that, I may start making mixes with out screaming to share with this forum and other musicians that dont like the screaming, it will be easy now that i have the tools and ability to do that on my own. Glad you dug the music though!
