I don't know if anyone else has been looking at the MCX 3 pc shell packs brand new on musiciansfriend.com for $499.99? It would be so cool to have a MCX in cases and ready to go to gigs or auditions, parties or open jams. The new midtown has a few problems that I can't escape and make the deal not so sweet. The 1st problem is that they are Shamrock Green. I could only see playing these on St Patrick's Day. I've always thought that that shade of green isn't made for drums. The next problem is it is a 20" bass drum but I could get past that and maybe come to like it. The real deal wrecker is that the mounted tom is 8" x 8". I wonder if it could be tuned low enough to sound good and still be able to bounce a roll. Does anyone have praise for their MCX 8" x 8" mounted tom? Just thought I'd open this up because I don't see another deal with so much potential.
I've had (and still have and use) an 8" tom and from my experience you can't really tune an 8" that low due to its size. Tried tuning it lower before, but it just sounds off. I hope I'm making any sense. I use one or two ply heads on the batters, so it could be that i was getting nasty overtones that you probably wouldn't get with a Pinstripe/EC2/Performance 2 type of head.
The toms on my Masters BCX i have now tuned 'in tune with the shell' (the Simon Phillips approach) and although they sound a bit higher than I'm used to (almost like Terry Bozzio tunes his front toms), the resonance and the way they ring out is absolutely stunning. Running clear G2's over clear G1's by the way. The 8" tom sound high, but cuts through, but obviously lacking the low end of the 10 and 12".

And about those pics of those K Customs; i thought porn wasn't allowed here

Thanks Matt. If not for you, I’d still be waiting for the rack tom and wouldn’t have even begun looking at cymbals and hardware. Now it’s complete.

That kit with those cymbals looks hot Marv! If I bought another kit the ole lady would probably split. That would be cool except we're buying this house and just went solar. I'd hate to be stuck with the whole tab! Centurylink was down here the last few days. I've been working on songs, trying guitarists, and being stung by the news. I could choose toms from my kit or bag up the Exports for a quick outing. I also think of cheap electric kits even though I don't really like them. They are easy to move.

Thanks dude. Her recovery is MUCH more difficult and involved than mine but she's getting there, slowly but surely.
