    Default Masterworks Sonic Select Recipes

Drawing from two years of research and artist testing, Pearl presents Sonic-Select Shell Recipes: five distinct, extensively tested drum formulas each fine-tuned for their given performance application.

By filtering the nearly-endless array of custom options in the Masterworks spectrum down to specific shell, edge, and hardware fusions, each recipe creates a truly unique sonic signature; clearly defining the Masterworks custom drum experience for the discerning professional.

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: STUDIO

    SHELL
EvenPly-Six Maple/Gumwood – A thin combination of a hard exterior with milder tonewood, Studio’s shell is designed to vibrate freely for explosive mid-to-low range warmth.

    EDGE
Outer 60° – Helps the thinner shell speak with brightness and power without sounding harsh.

    HARDWARE
MasterCast Hoops – Gives each drum added weight for tonal body, and increases volume in each stroke, particularly in rim-shot hits and high-velocity play.

    LUGS
CL Bridge Lugs are a Pearl staple. The CL bridge lug gives the drum a classic look and contacts the shell in separate points for the right amount of vibration control.

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: HERITAGE

    SHELL
4-ply Maple / Mahogany w/ 4-ply Maple Reinforcement Rings – Responds like the rumble of a classic roadster; a classic combination of mid-range projection and boosted low-end thunder.

    EDGE
Outer 45° – Traditional edge draws added projection and resonance in this darker-toned shell.

    HARDWARE
FatTone Hoops – Lighter in weight but never lacking in rigidity. Respond similarly to the original “stick-chopper” of the vintage era with added tuning stability. Excellent for drawing extended sustain.

    LUGS
STL Swivel Lugs have less direct shell contact than any other Pearl lug. This little wonder features a pivoting brass tension casing that guarantees even tuning and reduced resistance to shell vibration.

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: URBAN

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: URBAN

    SHELL
EvenPly-Six Birch/Gum/Birch with 4-ply Maple Reinforcement Rings. 8-ply Snare Drums – Perfectly captures each stroke with articulate high-volume punch and quick, even decay.

    EDGE
Rounded 45° with Fully Round Edge on bass drums. Standard 45° on Snares – Helps boost low-end frequency with increased shell contact along the head collar. Bass drums feature subdued sustain and maximized low-end power.

    HARDWARE
2.3mm SuperHoop II – Made to withstand heavy play without an undue limit on the performance across the tuning range.

    LUGS
STL Swivel Tube Lugs have a pivoting tension casing that increases projection and reduces unwanted overtones in shell resonance.

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: STADIUM

    SHELL
8-ply Maple and 10-ply Floor Tom / Bass Drums. – A thick shell for maximum power and drive.

    EDGE
Outer 60° – Increases brightness and power and reduces unwanted overtone.

    HARDWARE
2.3mm SuperHoop II – Made to withstand heavy play without an undue limit on the performance across the tuning range.

    LUGS
BRL Swivel Lugs assure the ultimate in head seating and tuning integrity.

Masterworks Series Sonic Select Shell Recipe: MODERN DRY

    SHELL
4-ply Maple and Gumwood with 4-ply Mahogany Reinforcement Rings – A thin shell with softer ring and tonewood that adds focus in the bottom end.

    EDGE
Inner 45° – An unconventional edge that contacts the head beyond the shoulder. Focuses the apex to the inner shell plies and increasing control in low tunings.

    HARDWARE
MasterCast Hoops – Added weight for increased volume and controlled sustain on each drum.

    LUGS
STL Swivel Lugs have a pivoting brass tension casing in the two-point STL lug assuring accurate tuning, decreased shell weight, and increased low-end power.

I'm waiting to see all of the drummers in-line, placing their orders for gumwood drums, at Masterworks prices. This is quite a gamble.

Awesome looks, would love to own one some day. One thing I wish Pearl did more of us more natural/stained finishes. I just ant believe colors like mocha tamo and darker earthy colors are so overlooked. Maybe they don't sell well? ( I don't crunch the numbers). But I do own a pearl reference, masters and a export so it's fair to say I'm always checking for hot new finishes from Pearl.

    Keep up the good work!

Someone has to ask: What is gumwood? What wood that we've heard of before is it similar to? I (and probably many people) am not familiar with this wood at all.

If it's same as DW/Gretsch uses then it's most likely American Sweet Gum which is like 800 or so on the janka scale, is readily available and cheap .. closest wood comparable to Sweet Gum would be Poplar

knock yourself out with some Sweet Gum info ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquidambar_styraciflua

Thanks for the information. It's funny - when I heard gumwood I wondered if that was some new-fangled way of saying poplar.

Sweetwater has a few videos from the Pearl booth on YouTube. I know there was a lot of talk that Pearl was doing away with the wood/fiberglass line, but that was on display so I guess it'll be around at least another year. They have one of each of the new Masterworks lines and briefly discussed the shell composition of each. More interesting to me was to hear that they are offering some new exotic outer veneers. They had a really nice burled maple veneered kit on display.

A couple of questions I have: They talk about these new Masterworks shell lines but I haven't heard whether you can still design your own shell compositions. Are you now limited to those 5 types of shell and bearing edge combinations? I sure hope not. Also, there are new restrictions on the sale & distribution of certain exotic woods such as rosewood (this is a real problem for guitar makers that use rosewood fretboards) and bubinga. I am wondering if you can still get Masterworks with a bubinga veneer. I hope so, but I'm doubtful that's still an option.

I was actually just watching Nick on youtube with Pearl .. haha

I would assume Masterworks sonic select is just an expansion of Masterworks where you can buy the 5 different selected shell types offered or custom order your own shell specs

reference/referencepure/music city custom ... masters maple reserve/masters maple complete .. notice the recurring theme here?

That sweet looking kit with the gong bass drum looks to have black nickel hardware. There's another pic of it that makes me believe that it definitely is, and it's not just a lighting thing. Looks great with that kit as opposed to all dark black chrome.
