    Default Pearl world series

This kit is a Pearl World Series "WX" drum set. Pearl came out with the World Series in late '85 as a mid-level (semi-pro) line. Two series were made; the "WX" and "WLX". Both had the same shells, but the "WX" series were wrapped, and the "WLX" series had a high-gloss lacquer finish. These particular drums are "WX" but they have had the wraps removed, and a black polyurethane stain put on them, giving them a unique black satin finish with a hint of wood grain (which looked amazingly good for an unwrapped kit).

The World Series was built from '85 until '92 (this one is an 89-92), but the shell design continued for some time after that. The shells are 8 ply wood; two ply of Linden (Basswood) [inside] with "super laminate" for good punch and projection; 5 ply Mahogany (not Lauan) [in the middle], and one outer ply of birch. The exact same shells were renamed the "SLX Prestige Session Elite" in late '91. In '94 the series changed again to "SPX", then in '97 the series changed again to "SRX", and then the shell design (so far as I know) was discontinued.

The lugs on this set are "transition" models, utilized between the coffin lug style of the 70's and early-mid 80's, and the long lugs of the early 90's. That's why this particular model World Series kit is dated within the later '89-'92 iteration of the line. The previous iterations of the shells supposedly incorporated a cheaper Lauan Mahogany, but this isn't one of those. So, this is a very sought-after shell tone, and somewhat rare to find with this many drums, and in such good condition.

I found them in a pawn shop, complete as follows:

1 PEARL FREE FLOATING SNARE W/PEARL STAND
2 22" BASS DRUMS (ONE W/MANGLED FOOT, STILL WORKS)
    10", 12", 13", 14" TOMS WITH 4 PEARL MID-GRADE MOUNTS
    16", 18" FLOOR TOMS
    A COUPLE PEARL STANDS

As I said these were refinished myself at home. I used black Minwax Polyshades on them. The entire thing cost me about $40 (poor mans solution, but it's not bad).

    Hi Sticky Ricky,

It's nice to see a "big" kit without a lot of cymbals cluttering it up.

    Hi Jam,

Maybe that's a good thing. I'm even amazed at some players who will buy a little "hip gig" type of kit and then clutter it with a bunch of extra cymbals. I prefer the clean looks myself.

Thanks for the post. Brings back some good memories. My first Pearl Kit was a Ferrari Red one with Red Paiste Color sound cymbals. Good job on the refinishing.

    PearlPaiste,

I always played Zildjian cymbals so I don't remember the red Paistes. I'll have to try to find a picture of those.

Well done on the restoration! Looks classy. My first kit was a red world series, I remember the bass drum especially, nice punch and boom.

My first kit was a world series also! It was a silver chrome finish. Those things were cannons! And the snare it came with was steel. Great find!!

    Thanks guys.....

I appreciate the kind words on the refinish, and the finish is really just "ok". Not quite what I intended, but good enough for now. Definitely better than the old wrikled wraps that were on it when i got it.

18 looks good (dont know what all the white specs are on these images, must be on the image?):

I still have my wlx set in coral red. Great job on the finish. These are great drums. Mine was my first set. They were all I played up until about 5 years ago. I got mine in 87.

    Hi,

Your refinishing looks great (especially since the wood under the wrap on those probably wasn't put together with a lacquer finish in mind). I've always loved black drums. Very classy.
