Doesn't hurt to try. I have not seen many pro studios do this, but if it's for home recording or jamming out to why not.. If I was recording an album the POSSIBILITY of vibrations would be enough to stop me. For gigs, jamming, Youtube etc I wouldn't be as concerned. 2 boom stands don't that up all that much room and you have more options for placement personally.

Vibrations will travel up the stand and into the shockmount a bit. You may not hear it in playback but it will happen. At the end of the day if conveninence is what you're after I'd say go for it. There are no "rules" in drumming.

We use short mic mount tubes for the "underheads"

and to reach in to the snare & hat, we attach a short boom.

There's undoubtedly some vibration picked up by the mic, but in a live situation it's not audible. The advantages of a rack - clean look, consistent positioning, reduced hardware, and ease & speed of set-up & teardown - outweigh our typical desire for sonic purity. And if the vibrations were audible, we'd use shock mounts.

I know this post is old but I think it gave me the idea to "underhead" mic my gig kit's right-hand side cymbals. Since do not have a rack, I mounted mine off of the floor tom rim.

I mount my floor tom mics to the tops of the legs... it works well.

Floor tom works great. You can also mount them on cymbal stands as well.

Underheads are super popular from what I've seen. I've used them on a bunch of tours, mainy to save time and stands. I've never been a huge fan of the sound, but I do like pleasing the engineer.

You kind of lose the image and size of the kit, at least to my in-ear mix. I feel like it becomes almost one-dimensional. When I'm at home I still use traditional drum overheads on recordings.

I've heard of some people using underhead microphone placement on records. I can't imagine the sound would be that great, but apparently they can work wonders on low-ceiling drum rooms.

To be fair, you can do all that with Gibraltar stuff, and also you could have done most of that, if not all of it, by combining Gibraltars leg/feet sections with ICON rack bars - with is essentially what Pearl has done here.

The more round piping they add to the Icon the better it looks. Who would of thought.
