Have you ever played and marched with a marching snare? Those washers are life-savers, especially on the snare side. They help the keep the drum from detuning and possibly keeping t-rods from falling out. When a t-rod falls out while you are marching, it is nearly impossible to find. The down side is that it is a PAIN IN THE *** to try to change heads because the the damned washers won't let the tension rod move.
