Stunning drum Matt. The strainer and VKey system, while functional and proprietary, can make things like changing a reso head or snare wires more difficult. Nonetheless, I love my VK snares and find their craftsmanship and tone to be extraordinary.

On a side note, I had no idea that finished interiors were rare, my only DW snare (the R40 ICON) has a pristine inner lacquer on the Romanian River Oak.
I thought that DW Collector's snare drums come with lacquered finishes, as opposed to the rest of their drums. Kind of one of their calling cards. All of my DW snares, current and past, have lacquered inner shells if I'm not mistaken.

When I spoke to John Good, he was against the idea of finishing the interiors of any drum. He wanted to leave them untreated and smooth. But that was about 7 years ago... times may have changed. My other Collector's Series Maple/Mahogany has a gorgeous outer ply, but unfinished interior.

Here is the newest addition to my collection. It's a Gretsch solid aluminum 6.5x14 snare. It has a 3mm cast aluminum shell, very similar to the Pearl Ultracast. It came from the factory with diecast hoops, solid brass tube lugs, and dual adjust strainer. She's a real looker. I only have 2 snares left with black hardware, and they will be sold soon. The Ultracast will sell pretty easily.

Looks great Matt, that’s a stunning snare. I really like the lugs and the knurled stripe in the center. I bet with the thick cast shell it sounds amazing too! Congrats!

what another nice drum...love the minimaliist (again) and surprizingly flat throw off system, and the general aspect of the drum.....but aluminum? don't you have 3-4 of them? and the best of the best,an ultracast?....seems like you want to get rid of everything pearl snare drum ?

    Thanks LD! It's a really well-made instrument.

The DrumCraft aluminum is on it's way out. It's a 5mm shell with satin hardware... too thick for my taste. The Pearl Ultracast is a nice drum, but it's on it's way out too. This Gretsch beats it in my opinion. The Ultracast doesn't have the features I like in a snare, but the Gretsch does.

I'm not getting rid of all of my Pearl snare drums, just the ones with black hardware. Even when the Ultracast and Masters Premium are gone, I will still have 7 Pearl snare drums with chrome hardware... some really nice ones too.

This just arrived today. I ordered it a few months ago. It's an ash stave shell, with double abalone inlay, and a thinned-out center shell, only 1/4" thick. It's going to make a beautiful drum!
