Wheres the rest of the kit? btw that is a sweet finish! I think black hardware would over power it, chrome makes it.

    Hi,

Thanks. Yes, the contrast between the matte black finish, with chrome hardware (and the brass highlights) looks very classy. I've always played black kits, but this is the first time I've tried a "matte" finish. I love it because it doesn't show any finger prints. It's much easier to handle the drums.

The main drums in the kit are all packed away in their cases. I have to use a Roland V kit at home so I don't have them all set up. I'm waiting for a gig this summer where there is a lot of light and I have time to take pictures of the rest of the kit.

    Hi Matt,

Thanks. Since you are big fan of "concert toms", I'll have to get a picture of the 8x4 tom up for you sometime. The 8x4 has the standard STL-150 Reference Pure swivel lugs.

Cool little Tom! At first I didn't think I would like that finish.....tried picturing a marshal meets drum thingy. Think "you got your chocolate dipped in my peanut butter" sinerio. I just couldn't picture the two together.

Well! I love it! LOL I want to see the whole kit now!

    Hi Rob,

Thanks. It actually looks darker black in person. The flash from the camera makes it look a little lighter. Also, you can't see the texture from much of a distance so it looks like a flat black on stage. The chrome and brass pick up the stage lights against the matte black really well.

The best part about the finish is that it doesn't show any finger prints or scratches. It's alot easier to wipe the chrome hoops and hardware clean when you don't have to worry about blemishing the finish on the shell.

I must have missed this... did you cut the tom down yourself, or did you order it that way? I wouldn't think Pearl would make a tom like that without calling it "Masterworks".

I also forgot to ask MM, when you remove the badges from RFP drum, do they have adhesive behind them, or just the screws in the shell? On the signature snares, they have the screws AND adhesive that is SO sticky it is amazing - the stickiest double-faced tape I ever worked with. Must be made by 3M "squared"

Yes, the tom was custom made from an 8x8 tom, as was my 8x4 concert tom. Fortunately, the air vent on a Reference Pure shell is offset from the center of the shell (measuring between the top and bottom bearing edges) which allows this kind of modification. The Reference Pure shells also do not have a production sticker on the inside of the shell so you don't have to worry about peeling that off either.

Yes, the badges on the Reference Pure drums have both screws and a light rubber cement adhesive (which is very easy to rub off of the shell and the badge). The adhesive they use on the metal shells is ridiculously sticky. I once tried removing one of those hideous out-dated square badges from my smallest Rocket Tom and ended up having to buy another Rocket Tom!

On the wood drums they use the rubber cement which is easier to work with. All you have to do is remove the screws and then run a piece of dental floss behind the badge to pry it off.

The double-face tape holding on the Omar Hakim snare drum badge was TOUGH. It may have been because the drum was so old... but it was hard to get off!

    Hi Matt,

Yes, maybe that was the case. That snare has the older style of badge. I was referring to the Masters, Reference, Reference Pure, and Mastworks badges that I've worked with more recently.
