Flip-flops! Seriously,I thought it was nuts but have been playing that way for about a year now, after 25 years in sneakers or whatever was strapped to my feet! I wouldnt try it with any other sandle than the thong like flip-flops that go between your big toe,you end up gripping with the toes when you walk or play and they have stayed put through some HUGE shows

Gotta say, I'm fond of playing with shoes, but I prefer in socks. First off, cuz I get to really "feel" the pedal, the air of the bass drum, and the bounce off the head. Second, for my fast double bass playing, it helps so my foot slides easily on the footplate, and keeps me from experiencing any unnecessary sticking of friction cuz of sweat or dirt 'n stuff.

living in florida, i probably play 90 percent of the time barefoot because i usually only wear flipflops. i just kick them off when it's time to play.

however, this winter down here has been very cold, and i have gotten used to playing in sneakers with socks, of all things. i havent worn socks very often at all in the past 10 years since moving down here.

now, i am wondering if i will go back to barefoot when the weather finally warms up again any day now ....

cant imagine playing in anything like boots or real shoes, though.

I found this link. Has anybody tried these shoes? I've read positive reviews.

I like to play in the Vans slip-ons. They are thin and light weight so I can still feel the pedal but have a slight grip. That's all I use those shoes for, they are 3 years old and still look brand new

I have more balance in socks for some reason. I like the feeling more than with shoes.

In order from first to last : Barefoot, socks, slippers or any lightweight shoe. Heavy shoes and boots drag and don't feel natural at all. To me it's like wearing gloves with those girly wrist weights strapped on.

I refuse to wear sneakers or boots in my everyday life so why would I wear them when I drum?

Barefoot all the way. The only shoe I'd even consider having on my foot while playing would be a pair of Vibram Five Fingers.
