You have already stated that one of the sets is a Pearl Export. I personally, would take Birch over Poplar anyday. Poplar isnt bad, I just much prefer the projection and tonal qualities of Birch over Poplar.

However, the quality of the drums as a whole is a big factor here as well. That said, an Export rules over most of all the other competition due to its exceptional quality, hardware, and Pearl reliabilty. IMHO, the only other intermediate level drums that can compete against the Exports are the Tama Superstars (birch shells).
This may be the other kit your referring to, I dont know. In any case, the Superstars rise above the Exports in terms of overall quality. Birch/Basswood shells, sound-bridge hi-tension lugs, diecast hoops, Starcast mounting system (not that great, but better than Export ISS), and high-end Roadpro hardware... all for a price just slightly above what you will pay for an Export.

Even if your not considering the Tama's, I'd highly recommend them. If not, the Exports are leaps above anything else in the price range...
Bottom line... Tama Superstars > Exports ... Exports > Anything Else ...

    Just my 2 cents tho...
You hit that right on the mark

I went to Sam Ash today and was comparing the Export to the Superstar. However, I will be getting a shell only set, so I don't know how that factors into what you said.

Would anyone else hear agree that Superstar > Export?
The reason I didn't say this before is I thought that it may be a bit biast at a Pearl forum, but DRUMMER 726 showed that there are people that state the truth without any biast.

Rep up to you drummer 726!

I think that if your looking into those two kits, i personally would go with tam superstar, great kits, good finishes, good price. but pearl does have great reliability, and the exports still sound good. the mapex pro m is another great kit, not the best customer service, but good price good sound, and great finishes.

Thanks man... have some rep yourself...

Even if your only getting the shell set, the only thing your really losing there is the RoadPro hardware. I still think the shell hardware and features is above that of which is featured on the Exports.
Good choice... when are you getting them ???

I am going to order them tomorrow....depending if they have them in stock or not, I could get them tomorrow or 3 weeks.

Although the Pearl EX Black on Black is pretty cool...

I would recommend buying Birch if you can afford it.

birch>popalar. birch is used in "pro" quality kits. fopalar is a lesser quality sound for drums imho. go with the birch. gretsch birch kits sound amazing
