Honestly, vibraphone mallets work much better around a drum set and cymbals than timpani mallets do. They produce a much better tone with less effort. Just don’t try play rimshots with them.

I have a 14x10 Roger Cambridge snare that I use in the studio. The Gibralar 8706 flat base snare stand will go low enough to accommodate that deep of a snare drum.

1920s Duplex 2-piece Nickel-over-Brass 14x4 6-lug snare. It has way more low-end than a 4 snare ought to have. The tuning range is insane and wide open it has beautiful complex overtones.

Are you running a coated reso head right now? That’s a sure way to dampen the resonance of a drum. And a 2-ply on the reso will do that even more so! Try a clear ambassador.
