Any feedback on upgrading stock hoops to a sturdier hoop? Does it change the drum sound? What are the pros/cons? Thinking about outfitting my Vision set with Super Hoops II.

Stock are 1.6 mm steel flanged hoops. You can upgrade to a pearl super hoop which is a 2.3mm flanged hoop. People complain about the 1.6mm being too thin and bend over time due to rim shots and affects tuning. 1.6mm create a more open sound but require frequent tuning. A 2.3mm hoop will be a bit more sturdy and hold tuning a little better. But less openness than the 1.6mm (hard to tell). It's up to you. I'd upgrade the snare hoops top and bottom and leave toms unless you shot a lot on toms.
Oh. Also there is die cast hoops which are heavy and create a fat sounding drum with the least amount of open sound but still some. I'd recommend these only on snare but you can use it on toms too. Usually I'd say to put them on if you have a thick shell and bigger sized drums. Plus they cost at least 2x-3x much as the 2.3. Pearl brands their die cast as master cast hoops.
Another option could be pearls fat tone hoops which are essentially 1.6mm hoops but reinforced to have the sturdiness of a die cast but still have openness of 1.6mm. These also cost a lot though .
Pearl does a good job in matching their hoops with the drums based on build. Ssc- superhoops II (the superhoops and superhoops II are the same),The Mcx masters have master cast - maple, semi thick shells. Reference have master cast- super thick shells. And reference pure have fat tone- thinner shell and smaller sizes available. So have at it hoss.
There are other mm sizes in flanged but don't have any experience with them.
Hope this helps.

I like mastercast myself. My session kit has superhoops and my MCX has mastercast and I find that the mastercast provide a more focused, phat tone. I also like the look of die cast better. Would I spend all the money to upgrade a vision kit to diecast? Hell no!Mapex Saturn V in deep water ash burl: https://www.pearldrummersforum.com/a...p?albumid=1218

Do the upgrade to the 2.3 mm hoops. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. You won't regret it. I did it on a set of PDP FS series birch drums. I've personally never been a fan of die cast hoops, so the 2.3 hoops offer the best in tuning, sturdiness and open tone. DW used to use them exclusively.

I have not upgraded at all since 2008. Don't see a need, although I have Black Hardware so not as easy. I would like to try superhoops. Special order though.Patrick G.
