  • Best place to sell older equipment?

    Hey dudes & dudets,

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I think the time has come to try to sell my old 90's vintage MLX set and wanted to know what you think is the best way to sell. I've got a 7 piece Piano black 1990 MLX set with a brass 6 1/2" free-floating snare that I've had since I was 13 (Dad bought them for me) so that makes them about 30 years old. I believe they are all +1 sizes of 10x10, 12x11, 13x12, 14x12, 16x16, a 22x18" bass with Optimounts retrofitted to them. I've never had them out of my house and they were stored in hard cases when not set up. I'd say they're a solid 8-8.5 out of 10 with minor hardware pitting. Part of me doesn't want to sell because they've got some sentimental value, but I want to buy a new kit and just can't justify throwing these up in my attic to sit for who knows how long.

I'm not trying to make this a for sale post, but how do some of you sell your gear? Ebay, Craigslist, Reverb, Guitar Center, etc? Guitar Center advertised a buying event today, but having been there before to sell things, I know they're going to low-ball me and as most of you know, the MLX was the top of the line maple kit back then. I know GC wouldn't give me half of what I want for these things.
    Attached Files

The shells are in great condition. Very few surface scratches from moving them around my homes over the past 30 years, but other than that they've been stored in a conditioned space just about their whole lives with me. The weak area of these kits are/were the lugs and the screws that mount them to the shells from the inside. I've had a few of the screws break off still in the threaded studs that go through the shells over the years. Hardware quality, at least with the lugs, has always been my biggest complaint with this line.

Wow. Not bad for 4 pieces. That's over $1,000 USD. I'd love to get in the $1,200-1,500 range, but I may be dreaming.

I had a MLX 5pc including a matching free floater snare. I bought it used for $800 10 years ago. I sold it 5 years ago for $600. You might want to sell the Free floater snare separate. Just speculation but if you get $800 for everything that might be about all. CL OR FB Marketplace might be a better option.

I saw these in person, really nice set Kris. Kris sold me a really nice Sabian HH Chinese, which is getting all dolled up at DOS; actually, it's in transit as I type.

I will; I'll post pics once it's back from the drum shop. It will pair up nicely with the 19" Paragon.

And they should. They need to make money and they are taking the biggest risk simply due to their overhead. I’m not saying it’s smart to sell it to them, but I understand why they are doing what they are doing.

Just like a pawn shop .. buy low - sell high .. only people who sell to pawn shops and GC are people that NEED quick cash and know they won't get what it's worth .. that and druggies who need next fix
