I haven't posted much on here, well, for MANY reasons. But, I thought the Vintage forum might appreciate this. I've finally started playing with my dad's GLX drums. One of the things I did was pick up an 18x16 (in red wine) along with a 24x16 Bass (in wine red....it's on the floor next to the 18"). I'm planning on getting them refinished (I had to take some pics to send to the guy so he knew what we were dealing with). This kit is currently set up with 12x10, 13x11, 16x16, 18x16, and 22x16. In the future, I plan on replacing the 22 with the 24. Call it my "ode to 80s/90s Rock/Hair-Bands/Heavy Metal" Kit. All cymbals are Zildjian Z Customs (15" Mastersound Hats, 14" Mastersound hats, 16, 17, & 19" crash and 21" Megabell Ride)

LOL....that will be part of getting them in shape. I'm leaning toward the fiberskyn heads, I like the way they sound. The drums I got from dad all had various heads on them, I think either from being on the road and basically taking whatever he could find....OR.....in the end buying what he could afford. The heads that are on there ARE functional, so they'll stay until I pull everything apart to ship the shells off. Pulling all the hardware off will be a definite chore in and of itself. I'm sure most around here would rather see it look something like this:
8, 10 - 12,, 13 - 16, 18....22x18 bass drum. All Zildjian A Custom cymbals.Last edited by CoyoteG; 03-01-2018, 01:26 PM.

I had never put two and two together, but I pulled the toms down off the shelf and 3 of the 4 have fiberskyns on them (13, 14, & 15). The 12x9 that I got in also has a fiberskyn......so, at least on THAT kit (22, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15), it will probably be all fiberskyns. I like the way the 16 sounds with the fiberskyn, so I might stick with them on the bigger kit (24, 12, 13, 16, & 18). The piano black 8x14 super gripper snare was never dad's, but one I found off of ebay, along with the brass snare (dad's brass snare is on the shelves behind the short toms).Last edited by CoyoteG; 03-01-2018, 01:22 PM.

Coyote G, I sure hate to speculate about your first statement about haven't posted,,,,,,,,,,,,, lots of reasons...
I will leave it at that and focus on your kit scenario. If I had a 24 and a 22 kick, I'd be playing double bass especially if you are 80's/90's style in your plans.
Tell me to shut up if you just want to stick to single bass and use the 24. It won't hurt my feelings.Emerald Fade MMX kit: 22x18 10x8,12x9,14x11,14x12,16x16,6.5x14 snare or 6x14 Black Nickel Hammered Pearl Sensitone
1964 Blue Glass glitter Rogers Cleveland Era Holiday drums
8x12, 16x16, 14x20, 5x14 Powertone Snare

I could set up a double bass kit, with the 2 x 22, and MIGHT for pictures. But, for the record, I prefer to play single bass myself. For the record, my dad DID play double bass.
back in 65-67, with the NORAD band:
back in the late 70s, early 80s.....when he was on the Vegas, Tahoe, Reno circuit with Tony Orlando, Burt Bacharach, Paul Anka:

Ah so you bought that 8x12 that was on eBay... Very nice. I was looking real hard at it and almost snatched it up, but I already have an 8x12. I have a pretty big collection of GLX drums, all piano black, that I have collected over the years. Got my first GLX kit in 1985, and I'm still playing it! I absolutely love them!

I did.....dad had the 9x13 & 11x13......but with the 8x10 & 10x12 , the 9x13 was kind of "lost", it didn't really fit in anywhere, except by itself. When I saw that 8x12 pop up, I knew that it was a perfect fit and I had to have it. I did a little research with the online catalogs and found that they actually made a factory 8x12 (as well as the 9x13), so I was good with the fact that it was probably "real". I'm glad that we didn't get into a bidding war, I picked that 8x12 up for a steal (IMHO). The last time I had bid on a GLX on ebay, it was the 8x8 shell without hardware. I threw down a $400 bid at 10 seconds left and still lost it. It will haunt me as the "unicorn" that got away....LOL.
