  • [Model Identification] Pearl Export Select

    Hi everyone !

First of all, please forgive my poor english, I'm french.
I've a Pearl drumkit since 90's and I can't remember the exact year I bought it. I just remember it's an Export Select.
But when I try to looking for this model with this color, I can't find it at all except once and it talked about "Special Edition" but I really don't believe it.

So I try to know what model it is and which wood is used.
You can find pictures of the entire cleaning I made last year here :

Note that I've replaced the ISS system and the new one is a bit different.
I've also replaced the floor tom leg bracket by a Master Series model and I've removed the Tom fixation on the bass drum because I use a Gibraltar rack.

If you say it's an ELX lacquer kit and not wrapped then it looks like a 1998-1999 ELX in #175 Scarlet Mist since it has matching wood hoops and fits color

1998 ELX's were 7 ply shells of Select Hardwood / Asian Mahogany / Select Hardwood

1999 ELX's were 7 ply shells of Agathis / Asian Mahogany / Santa Maria

I have to say though .. from these pics it looks like a wrap or solid lacquer .. can you see woodgrain? .. I can't

I believed that matching wood hoops was an Export Select specification.

It looks exactly the same kit !
What are the differences with 1997-1998-1999 models ?

OK and if we refer to this document :
http://www.labatteria.it/public/file/Export-by-year.pdf The #175 Scarlet Mist is available only in 1998/1999 !
Except the wood, the only difference between those 2 models is that the 8" and 9" tom are available only on the 1999 model...

And, for those of you playing at home... the 1996 ELX has contrast natural finish wooden bass hoops.

PS your English is pretty much flawless.

Or these! This kit was really pretty. Shame they were so abused! The 12" rack looked liked it was used to drive nails.

                        Hahaha.
If it weren't for the fact I couldn't get add ons, I may possibly still have mine. In fact I did keep the snare haha

                          Just for posterity sake
This kit looks like a 1993 EPX kit, called the EX-Pro in the catalog
the color is #71 Ferrari red and it has the IMS mount which was only available on that drum kit
The isolated mount did not reappear on Export drums until 1998 when it appeared on the ELX series. However at that time # 71 Ferrari red was no longer an option.

Pearl copied many of the successful features of Yamaha drums of this time period
The Ferrari red was a color commonly found on the high end Yamaha kits such as the Recording and Tour Custom
Further Pearl copied the successful Yamaha high tension lug found on the Recording Custom series (YD 9000), as well as the bass drum claws. Later this lug would be found on the YD 5000 series Stage Custom, which competes directly against the Pearl Export series.

Any how your Ferrari red Pearl EPX drums look great, enjoy them as you will never be able to replace them, they are part of Drumming history now.

I have the same kit .... except my wooden hoops match the color of the kit... These kits were sold as entry level kits in the US. Most folks did not purchase drum bags or cases with their kit and simply carried them about from gig to gig open among all the other equipment in the vehicle. What the sales people never tell you is that one should never gig with lacquer finish drums if one does not posses cases of bags to protect the shells. Hardware moving about and the occasional quick stop could do some hefty damage to a lacquer shell.... Mine are dinged a scratched in many places simply due to poor placement and care during gigging.

The kit is a wrapped kit ... Its a 1993 Pearl Export Pro kit (only year they made them), the kit came in #71 Ferrari red and included the IMS mount shown in the pictures. The Pearl export pro was intended to best the very successful YD 5000 kits or Stage series and Stage 2 series (Power toms) from Yamaha
