Killer playing man! That's such a great tune too! I feel like I still have a lot of practicing to do until I can sustain that Porcaro halftime shuffle at that tempo for that duration of time.

That kit came out looking a million dollars.
I love sparkles too. I have a gold sparkle Sleishman.Check out my incomplete snare drum collection thread. I like it and think it is quite charming. :)

Just a heads up, I've ordered some more wrap from Precision Drum Co.... got another old(er) Yamaha to re-wrap, will post some pictures in another thread once it's near completion, it's going to need a bit of work, a lot of time... this one i'm attempting myself start to finish. The gold sparkle was done by a pro.Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau (Blue Sparkle)

These drums are as rare as hens teeth, I was very happy when I acquired mine. They sound just like the Recording Custom (YD-9000) from that period (late 1970s). There is not a drum kit made today which has the ability to match the sound of these drums…..
This orange kit looks awesome
The interesting point of this drum kit is this is not the USA version of the kit. Since its made in Japan it’s a G version which was not offered in the American market…..
All the American market kits were “D” Version which were made in Taiwan. The ‘D” version kits are extremely rare, and bear a different tom holder (The old 70 series). By 1981 the YD-7000 was no longer sold in the USA, it was replaced by the Tour Custom (800 series part numbers) . Yamaha removed the YD designation from the USA kits and sold them under the names Recording, Tour and Stage. Which are designations it retains today.
The G version kits (MIJ) have the same drum shell makeup as the series sold in the USA called Tour Custom (Birch P Mahogany Birch shell). The Tour Custom are these Japanese YD-7000 “G” series with the early YD-9000 tail light lugs.
I notice the upgraded the tom holders, which were changed to the later style (a smart idea). The early tom holders (especially the 70 series) can be clunky and difficult to position.
Its hard to believe that a 40 year old drum is still in excellent shape structurally and able to produce that vintage sound which kits today can not duplicate.
Excellent kit…. Thanks so much for the picturesLast edited by TJH; 07-02-2019, 06:15 AM.
