  • My return to drums - 8 pieces of fiberglass

The short version of the story is I used to rock a double kick BRX and sold it when I moved to go to college. I have 4 weeks left, saw this on craigslist and couldn't say no.

One month to go before I go home and set it up, but for $400 I got all that plus 6 stands and a hat pedal. 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 24. Party time.

and the tone, power and sheer balls kills any double headed kit I ever heard. Welcome to the club and the vanguard!

Awesome, I had fairly gathered that the fiberglass and concert tom combo would equate to one aggro sounding kit. I'm into crazy sounding drums ala early Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, that sort of thing. I figure a good set of single plies will have me in business.

I will likely sell that snare. I have a custom one I managed to not sell in my hiatus...

Try to go with double ply if you can. People tend to play concert toms harder for some reason. I'm gonna rehead my Imps with EC2's, although pinstripes are a classic choice, as are CS black dot. At the moment, the drums have many of their original heads!Click image for larger version

They use to sell foam inserts called dead ringers. Cut them down and put on the CS heads you get a real 70s sound.

For some months I had rotos with Diplomats for all of my toms, and I play 2B or bigger. Never once had an issue. Single ply heads are my jam.

Uh, hey...so apparently this thing is a phenolic resin kit. The more i read the more awesome/rare it becomes.

What's the difference between fiberglass and phenolic resin?

I think I have to retract that statement. I saw a bunch of info on an identical size/finish kit so I assumed them to be the same shell construction, but the resin kits have a mahogany color to them. Either way, it's gonna work out just fine. Found lots of reports from owners saying things like "irreplaceable" and "best shells ever made."

                              Hardhitter, awesome!

                              Sorry for the slight sidestep,
Fibreglass is glass fibres (manufactured to sheets, or chopped etc) that are held together by two part resins.

Phenolics is a chemical manufacturing process to create synthetic polymers (ie earlier forms of plastic), created by treating Phenol with Formaldehyde. An early example would be Bakelite. Phenolics can be quickly identified by vigourous rubbing in one spot with a cloth, you can smell the formaldehyde after doing this. Many of the Pearl President series shells were phenolic.

Phenolic shells are more brittle, and not quite as strong as, fibreglass.
