"Out On The Tiles" means out on the town! It was from John Bonham's after work ditty. How Bizarre!

In 1987 it wasn't called SST. It was called HC/SMS. Heat Compression Shell Molding System. Nice little logo and all...

On a side note: I always found it a little interesting that Eric has fitted white bass drum hoops on the blue kit in the video (probably to complement the white resos).Kits: CZX - SZX - MLX - BLX
Snares: Pearl (8), Gretsch (2), Premier (2)
Cymbals: Paiste

As far as I can tell, the shells of the MLX and GLX are identical. Certainly, the description of the shells in the 1984 (the year GLX were introduced) catalogue suggests they are exactly the same.
And that is confirmed in the 1986 pricelist, where the shell description of each series is identical; Cross laminated all Maple shells.
So, the only difference is the lugs.
Long single piece lugs for MLX were introduced in 87. Prior to that the lugs on the MLX were the standard coffin lugs of that period.
However, the GLX lugs were the super grippers, including the snare, from the outset.
Each of the 2 different lugs has their own problems. The long MLX/BLX lugs are prone to break at the screw insertion point enabling attachment to the shell, if one is to keen and over tightens the inside screw.
The GLX's super gripper lugs have a habit of the round black plastic inner part of the lugs falling to bits after a period of time.
If you have access to a mate with a 3D printer, or have one yourself, it would pay to replace all of those. Or search the forum, there's other ways of dealing with the "issue".
Other than that, they are brilliant kits, in a period of Pearl's history, which is arguably unsurpassed. Look after them...
