You cant be lazy when it comes to kick drums. You have to spend time with it in order to get the sound and feel you want out of it. Sometimes youl get it first couple of tunes. It took me about a month or two messing around with different tunings, muffling, skins etc.

I like my 24x14 just above wrinkled. Biggest thing to me on tuning any drum is to have the head in tune with itself. I go around the edge of the head tapping at each lug and get them each to be at about the same pitch.
I like my reso a little tighter with a 5" port off center.

I like jaw on batter side with just a little tighter on reso too. Coated powerstroke 3 or emperor and muffle to taste. Will sound huge

The following works for me.
Get all your lugs finger tight, then put your hand in the center of the drum and apply some weight .... I guess you could actually put a 20 lbish weight in the center of the head too.
Anywayswhat I do is loosen a lug until the you see a wrinkle in the skin then simply tighten until you see the wrinkle disappear or just before.Move around the whole drum doing the following in a cross lug pattern. I reapt this process on the whole drum to try to get the head as easily tensioned as possile. You can experiment by tensioning just below the wrinkle point and then work yourway up. I personally don't usually use to much muffling ... Evans has a really cool bass drum ring works well.... Kinda expensive... So you could cut a piece of foam and run it across the bottom so it gently wedges up against both heads or a blanket.... And then you can experiment with having it touch just the reso or beater side. I have also used shredded newspaper before on the inside and it actually worked very well for real! And remember the kind of beater you use can change the sound of the drum tons too.got G.A.S. ?

I use Evans Emad heads on my bassdrums and i like the sound i get from them. Batterhead just above wrinkled and the reso a little tighter..sometimes more.

It probably would sound good JAW with a pillow or some **** in it....but keep it wide open and tune it up man, just to see if you like it. People tend to remain pretty ignorant on the tuning ranges of bigger drums...but do some exploring.Check out my Jelly Bean Vistalites!
