  • My Rogers "Big R" Kit

I've been looking for an old Rogers kit since I picked up the sticks again in 2007. On Superbowl Sunday I bought these beauties for a steal on EBAY. It's hard to believe they're 35 years old. I've picked up two additional drums since the original purchase and my dream kit is officially done. Enjoy!

Awesome! I love old 5 ply Rogers! I've still got a few, though I sold my 22-13-16 kit a while back. Gonna have to pick up some more soon!
Yours look to be in way better shape than mine were.

What are the rack toms and bass drum sizes?

          My bet is 12x8, 13x9, 14x10, 16x16, 18x16 and 22x14.
          Could be a 24x14 bass, but I think it's a 22.
I'm certain on the tom sizes as I've had the same ones myself, except the 18.

            Hi,

I really like the front bass drum head and the use of the inverted splash cymbals on your kit.

The toms are 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. The bass drum is 14x22 and the snare is a 5x14 chrome over brass dynasonic.

The head is by drumart.com - they do great work! Those are actually recycled cymbal bells cut and grinded from old broken Zildjians. They are great for effects.

Is the 15" tom a 15x12 rack mounted tom? Never seen a 15" floor of that vintage.
Still love the black Big R Rogers!

Yes the 15" is mounted to the side rack. It's actually a slightly newer Rogers XP8 drum. When I restored it I spatter painted the interior just like the older rogers drums so you have to look very hard to see the difference. It sounds great! I actually have a 10" XP8 shell that I'm working on now. When it's finished everything will move over to the right and the 16" will sit on the left next to the hi hat. I'm pretty sure that will be it though because I will have run out of room!

                        Love that KIT!!!

I had an orange Big R kit 10 piece kit with concert toms (I broke my first drumming world record on the Rogers kit) Roy Burns even did a clinic on my set (back when he was the only salesman)

You are missing the Big R pedals!! - I like those pedals so much (the toe stop IS MASSIVE) I have at least 6 of them in various conditions.

Those remind me of the Rogers drums my high school had in the 80s. I'm not sure of the year of them but they were almost certainly from the '70s. I've always said that they were the best sounding drums I've ever heard. They just sounded fantastic with coated Ambassadors for tom batter heads. Your set is awesome!
