  • Me playing some police classics with my aluminium free floater

Hey guys, here's me with my little Police tribute band "The Polis".

Please excuse the sound quality (1 mic) and face pulling......... and hope you enjoy it as much as i do, i'm playing on my 1983 aluminium free floater and my Masters Premium Birch 4 ply. The snare sounds great, dunno 'bout the drummer tho

The singer, god bless 'im, is actually a drummer who's only been singing about 8 weeks, i think he'll work out just fine.

    Is that Stewart Copeland? hahahaha
Awesome! You even got the blue kit rockin'. Driven to tears was definitely my favorite, rimshots sounded great.

It seems you learned the parts almost note for note. Did that take you a lot of time?

Hey Dale, cheers for that. Well........ been learning the songs since 2005 but had little luck with singers so only gigged around 15 times in that period. Hopefully once this guy gets trained up all that will change. But yeah it has taken a very very long time and a helluva lot of studying stewarts technique to get to this stage. Almost all police tribute bands out there are let down by their drummers, i feel, and i didn't wanna be another one but then that's up to the audience to decide not me. I do have a whole lotta fun doing it however , the music just speaks to me, i love it.

I love the Police as well. In fact, Stewart is one of my greatest influences. That said, I never took learning his parts to the level you have. It was for two reasons really. One, I was trying develop my own sound. Anyone I saw listening to someone strictly, I heard that influence in their original songs too strongly. The other reason was pure laziness.

I kind of think of doing it now though.

Hey dale, i'm actually a stewart copeland and bonham man myself. In my playing outside the polis there aint a whole lot of stewart on show maybe some polyrhythmic things and weird ride cymbal pulses but i certainly dont wanna be a copeland clone, where'd the fun be in that.

Of course, I was just stating what I saw growing up. Thanks for sharing this with me. Good luck with getting this off the ground.

Nice job, Robbie! If there's one band I almost never get tired of, it's The Police. You guys are doing the music justice, too. I played some of their songs with some guys I was playing with for a while. The singer couldn't touch Sting...or anyone else, for that matter. It was very ugly

Oh, but I was hoping to see the Sequoia Red DLX in action.

You will do mark, just may take a wee while, going into hospital next week for an operation on my neck/spine to remove a severely ruptured disc which may or may not end my drumming career eek. So all things being well, little red will resurface after a few months once i'm recovered. Wish me luck!

Best of luck to you. If it helps, I had a cervical laminectomy of C5, C6, and C7 back in 2004. They did it anteriorly and the the recovery was fast. The worst part was wearing the neck brace for a week or so. My symptoms came on quickly and the pain radiating down my left arm to my fingertips was off the charts. No amount of percoset could stop the nerve pain. When I woke up from surgery, the pain was gone. I felt a tingling for a while, but not pain. I was playing drums two weeks post op and was playing golf five months post op. You'll do fine. Thanks for sharing the videos.

Cheers quick stix, i'm getting a c5-6 discectomy anteriorly and they're inserting an M6 titanium and composite disc replacement. At the moment i'm relatively pain free but getting massive tingling in both hands, pain and loss of strength in both hands if i lift anything heavier than 10 pounds or play heavily. I notice my chops have really slowed too. I really hope this procedure fixes all this.................

I aint however using this as an excuse for my drumming

And thanks for the encouraging words.......

Medicine has come a long way. When I needed my surgery, their were only three places in the country doing disc replacements. My pain was so bad that I didn't have time to shop around. Now, disc replacement is widely available. You should have no loss in range of motion. I have the three vertebrae fused together. I have a stainless steel plate with six titanium screws (two in each vertebrae). They used ground up cadaver bone implant with surgical cement to form the fusion. The idea being that with time, bone would fuse the three vertebrae together. Once again, you'll be bashing and crashing before you know it.
