  • Vintage Leedy snare drum

I might be picking this snare up from a craigslist offer, but I'm wondering if anyone here knows anything about these snare drums. It's a shallow 6-lug (although it's technically free-floating and can tension can only be adjusted from the bottom side) 13" Leedy snare drum with single-flanged hoops, it's got the original Remo heads on both sides, and the shell is apparently made of some sort of very hard composite. The shell is perfectly round and in great condition. The snare wires are aftermarket, but the throwoff is original and still works. How much do you reckon it's worth?

    Hi,
Troll through the sticky thread ^^ "catalogue corner" and you will find a number of sites that may help you identify your drum via catalogues. Some links say leedy.
If you can't find it in the thread, google drumarchive as well

It looks to me to be in good order and old!

Can't help you with worth, we have a totally different market here lol

Thanks for the replies guys. I couldn't find anything about it in the catalogue corner, and I've spent way too much time on google without any results. Anyone else? I'm gonna go and try it out in a few days, but any info would be great.

I'd suggest to ask the folks at drumforum.org, but sadly it has been down.

I've seen a few drums from late 20's early 30's that look about the same as that drum. I think they were a lower line drum. Not really a "player" since tuning is difficult since you tune both heads with a single rod. And not really a "collector" as they dont usually fetch alot of $. I would say those are not original heads. That drum probably had calf skin heads when new. Those Remo's look like they are from the 50's. Not sure about any of that, but that would be my guess......

I had a bit of a poke around at sites myself.
"Leedy-Ludwig" was from 1951 to 1958 from what I can gather...
So if has to be at least pre 51, or after 58.

The throw off on the snare ^^ looks to be be more like 30's ish, from what I could see...

I guess we need a pic of the badge to help out!

              Good luck in your search

I have a little Slingerland about that size, really thin metal shell, and it sounds pretty good kinda cranked up with a Fiberskyn II on top and ambassador snare side. Some funky overtones, though. It has the original snares and throwoff and I really like its simplicity.

Cheers guys. I've decided it's not something I want to buy right now. Maybe an old K...
