Thank you to all who joined us on the Pearl Drummers Forum but we have decided to continue the conversation at the Pearl Drummers Group on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/groups/pearldrummersgroup Although the Pearl Drummers Forum is closed, the content is still searchable as there are many informative threads on Pearl gear. We hope to see you at the Pearl Drummers Group!
Did you take the Ludwig Reso off yet? They used to be the top competitors in the industry. My 1st drum was a natural wood Ludwig Marching snare. My first floor tom was a Red sparkle Slingerland that matched my red sparkle Kent set perfectly. My 1st 2 years at NMMI I played a Red sparkle Slingeland Snare Drum (we all did). My 3rd year there we played Red Sparkle Ludwigs with a silver mid section. I never had a Slingerland kit but yours makes me want one! I always wanted one! I've had 2 Ludwigs, 3 Pearls, a Kent (1st kit), and a complete no namer (I don't even remember the name).
Thanks man! You should just go grab an old Slingerland. For some reason they only bring 3/4 the value of a comparable Ludwig, and 1/2 a Gretsch or Swivo Rogers!
The reso was only on for that one gig because it was being recorded and used live, so we needed a mic in it. (that head is back home on it's '65 BDP Ludwigs) The only head that came with this kit when the last guy tore it down to ship was the original uncut Slingerland logo head. (coated Ambassador) Which is the one that is on it right now, set up in the band room.
My middle school was pretty new when I was there (95-98) and had some pretty new Yamaha marching snares, but I think they skipped on the quality. The bass drums and quads were usable, but the snares were garbage, and our band director went to the district band instrument graveyard and scored us 3 80s era Ludwig COW with 9 ply shells and Classic strainers you practically had to use pliers to engage, but they sounded GREAT!
My first drums were my dad's Ludwigs, '76 Classics, and there the only kit I have that doesn't have a price tag.
Lubbock isn't too far from here. You guys have that Steak House where if you can clean your plate with a 32 oz Sirloin, potato, and salad; you get it free? It's even closer to Roswell where I did 2 years of high school and freshman year of college; marching band and drum and bugle corps. My parents thought I was becomming a "hippie." My dad had no interest in music but he was a WORKER! He became a draftsman and then an engineer at night school in LA. I've been through there on I 40 but I don't remember ever stopping. Maybe someday I'll find an older Slingerland. Wonder why they stopped production?
You're thinking of Amarillo, our arch rivals to the north. I-40 runs through there but if you take I-27 South from Amarillo for 2 hours of flat nothingness you'll be in Lubbock. The steak at the Big Texan is 72oz and you have to eat all the gristle and all the sides or you still get a bill! http://www.bigtexan.com/
Lubbock's the home to Buddy Holly, Joe Ely, Mac Davis, Natalie Maines.
I don't think Slingerland ever really died off, but has been sold back and forth and is currently owned by Gibson guitars and they make some great drums. Expensive and hard to find dealers, but nice regardless.
You're right. I was thinking of Amarrillo. Windy! Lubbock is very Close to Roswell with the Institute. I had a roomate my rat year from Brownsville. He didn't make it. It was a rough place when I got sent there! There were people there from Lubbock but I don't know if I ever went there.
My best friend my Senior (yearling) year was from Midland. A lot of Texans go to NMMI!
Man does that steak look good! Has grilled jalapenos with it as well! If they're hot enough you'll have eaten most everything before you know it! LOL! Sneak in a jabenero and easilly finish the rest.
Got some new gear for the jam room and thought I'd put the pics in this thread, since the Slingerlands are still in their rightful place.
and all the percussion toys. (and the gong!)
and a couple driver's seat shots.
and finally, the pianos.
