  • Why doesn't DW use cast hoops??

Just wondering why DW doesn't use die cast hoops on their snares.

I'm actually using one now but miss my old Tama Imperialstar cast hoops.
    I supposed I could swap them out>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I suppose since steel hoops allows for more resonance. It also keeps costs lower for DW[although they're expensive anyway.]

While triple-flanged hoops do allow for more resonance, they're basically seen as secondary to die-casts and that's why almost every high end snare or kit uses die-cast hoops. It's used as a point of difference to separate lower and mid range kits from top of the line series - this is why die-cast hoops are not standard for Pearl kits until the Masters tier.

So with all that said - it's some of an anomaly that DW, who produce very high end kits, use triple-flanged hoops on all their drums. I'm amazed they've managed to get away with it without a largely negative reaction, as I doubt Pearl could suddenly start using Superhoop IIs on their Masters and Reference kits and get away with it. I can only speculate it was a risky cost-cutting move at the start, and once they got away with it, they just ran with it.

Because DW use reinforcement rings, and they dont go well with die cast hoops, because of their soundrestricting effect

That's definitely a possibility, but if that's the case - what about all the other drum companies who have reinforcement rings and still have die-cast hoops as the standard? Off hand, I can think of Pearl's MMX line, and Sonor's Delite series. It would only be a feasible explanation if they offered die-cast hoops as another option - which to my knowledge, they do not.

DW doesn't want to choke their harmonious snares in any way. I have play many snares with die-cast hoops but I would much rather have triple flanged. They let the snare sing a little more...

Die cast hoops are an option on all DW snares.

Ah, right, thanks for bringing that to my attention. What about the rest of the kit though? As the topic did move from just snares to all drums in general, when someone mentioned reinforcement rings.

DW's design and marketing thrust has always been maximium sustain and resonance, cast hoops are generally not compatible with that scheme. I respect the companies choice here; they do a ton of testing and must like the flanged sound.

                    They are optional on snares.

You can special order them on your kit or snare. They do make them.

Well, all of the above taht have been stated are probably correct. It does give more resonance but they probably have also gone with the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" attitude.

Any extra cost on that? If not, one negative point that's often made about DW has most definitely been eradicated.

I remember Slip came into Guitar Center while i was working, and schooled me on DW stuff. He said something along the lines that, DW's lugs were quite large so the lugs in addition with die cast hoops would some what kill the resonance.
