Tuning a picalo snare

Hey guys, what's up?
I just got a 13''x3" Pearl Maple Picalo snare, I bought this snare mostly to play jazz on. I was wondering from any of the jazz or even non jazz players here who own a picalo, how do you tune your's. a lot of jazz players have their snare low and when they smack em they have a huge crack. and there are other guys who have their snares fairly tight and sound good aswell. so i was just wondering how do you tune yours.

First... It's Piccolo.

Second... Tune it to how you like it. The piccolo we use at our school is a 13X3" Steel and is tuned medium. It very sensative, but has a nice pop with hit harder. Just tune it until you like the sound you are getting. I think a medium tension is best, because it's still sensative and not too poppy, but has a nice crack/"thWACK".

it all depends on your style man. Personally i've got this same snare and i jacked it up crazy tight! i love the sound! i took the "stock" snare from my export set and loosened it up to give it a lower more of a slower sound for when i'm playing softer music. Then i use my piccolo when i'm playing upbeat, harder stuff. i can't get enough of that sound!

It's all a personal choice, some people like it cranked and poppy, some looser and thicker sounding. Try it at different tuning settings and keep it where it sounds best to you.
