loud snare?

    Try an Evans Genera Head and a Hazy 300 res. Do not get a Genera Dry, I find that they don't do as well on wood snares. Way too much control and warm.
    The Genera will bring down the volume a bit without losing the crack. Plus you wont lose the natural tone of the drum this way as you would muffling or choking the drum by other ways.
    I also tune the Hazy 300 about a half step higher for a bit more overtone. It also projects the snare a bit more because your blending a bit higher pitch with it.
    This will definately help and turn the drum in that direction that you are looking for.
    But nothing is going to "majorly" change the drums volume without sacrificing the drums natural voice and projection.
