I have an Ultracast and it is a HUGE rip-off of the Noble and Cooley. The only big difference is that the Ultracast has triple-flanged hoops while the N&C has diecast. What made me choose the Pearl over the N&C is the lower price (the N&C was about a buck fifty more) and the better snare strainer. The SR-017 strainer on the Pearl is so much quieter and has a more positive action compare to the clamshell strainer featured on the N&C. Besides, I spent the $150 difference on two cymbals. Yay to that.
PhiWhere have all the original Pearl forumers gone?

Funny you should ask between these two, there's one thread from the Evans board that always sticks in my mind due to the honest opinions of two very experienced and knowledgable members in particular. I was pleasantly surprised by what I read actually.

yeah, i am quite surprised...GO PEARL!
i suppose its easier for a larger company to really make a better drum, because of the money, the machinery, and R&D it takes to put a drum into production.Official Recording Tip of the month for November:
Sometimes, things just need to go to 11.

I voted Ultracast because it's almost the same thing as the N&C for less money.

I'm not sure about aluminium snares... I haven't ever heard one being played... Then again, aluminium is a pretty sweet metal...
If you doubt my word, ask Monsieur Mangetout of France. He's eaten a plane over a year so far. XDLess, by simple definition, cannot be more. Seriously. Check the ****ing dictionary.
