  • Pearl Free Floating problem

    Hello

I have a second generation free floating brass piccolo however I have a problem with it. I can't get the snares close and tight to the head. They will always be hanging loose. This is made worse when I turn the snares off and then back on again.

I've got new snare wires, ribbons and strings coming so I can replace them, hopefully this solves the issue.

Does anyone have experience with this problem? Any ideas?

    Thank you

Probably gonna have to post some pics of the problem, help us figure out what's wrong. But in lieu of those, I'd say check the basics (forgive me for the wording, I'm not trying to teach you to suck eggs: I've no idea of your experience or not)

First, set your strainer tension to about halfway. Set the strainer to "on" (or engaged, whatever you prefer), and turn the drum upside down. Start on the butt-end, feed the ribbon (I prefer to use a grosgrain ribbon, some prefer strings, some prefer mylar strips, entirely up to you) through the snare wires and into the butt. Nip it up but don't tighten. Do the same thing on the strainer end. Again, nip up but don't tighten. Now pull the exposed ends of the ribbon in both the butt and strainer at the same time (hence why we nipped but didn't tighten) and get the wires centralised on the head. Me personally, at this point I pull a try bit (like 1-2mm) to one side more than the other, tighten that up, then pull tight on the other side, to get it central again, and tighten that side. Now you can tweak the tension on the strainer to get the snares as loose or tight as you want.

What wires are you using? I believe the second generation Free Floaters had the wires that extended passed the snare beds.
