      • For sure. There is another MassMusic exclusive from back in the day that I would love to track down--it's a 13x7 4-ply maple with Bubinga outer ply and Mastercast hoops. I believe that was was limited to 12.

I hadn't thought about them for a long time before starting my research on this drum, but it looks like they went out of business about a decade ago. For a few years, they were really popular and gorilla marketing around all the drum forums. Long time members of this forum probably remember Andy@massmusic (later Andy@MIT), who was a very active member. I think they eventually sold to Rupp's in Denver, but I don't know if any of the staff stayed around.

Thanks. Some of that sounds familiar.

I never purchased from them, but do remember they had a website and were quite active on the forum here.

It would be so easy to paint an old metal shell glossy white, but I just don't care for that color in a snare drum. The tattoo theme is interesting though.

The MMX series was available from 1993-2006. In 1999, the MMX series started coming with Mastercast hoops instead of Superhoops. Both the Purple Storm finish and Satin hardware were offered as catalog options in the MMX series from 2002-2006. This drum has a 4-ply (5mm) maple shell with maple reinforcement rings as well as Mastercast hoops, CL55 lugs, and SR015 throw off.

I like the satin hardware on this one, but have never been a fan of the SR-015 strainer.

                          • I wasn't a fan of satin hardware when it was available, but as soon as it was discontinued, it had a different allure. I have two other Masters snares with satin hardware to post eventually.

I prefer the SR017, but both work fine. It has never made any sense to me that the SR015 came on MMX/MRX snares and the SR017 came on BRX/MHX snares.

Fortunately, they use the same hole spacing so it's easy to switch. I prefer the SRL-150 for all of my upgrades now. It's the best of all worlds.

I used to order my Masterworks snare drums with the SR-1000 but eventually found it cumbersome and then the hole spacing wouldn't work with any of the other Pearl strainers. The SR-150 is just as reliable and functional , but is considerably more streamlined and is interchangeable with most other Pearl strainers.

This drum was available from 2005-2014. It has a mixed shell with 4 plies of birch on the inside and 4 plies of maple on the outside for a total of an 8-ply (10mm) shell. It has rounded 45 degree bearing edges and philharmonic snare beds. The hardware includes Mastercast hoops, TB50 tube lugs, and SR017 throw-off. The finish is #188 Smoke Flake.
