Modding a SR-160F Throw Off to fit on a 2nd Gen Free Floater

My 2nd gen FF stariner (the SR-010 model) recently gave out on me, one of the key bolts that holds the strap stripped out on the butt plate side However I saw this as a chance to upgrade to the newer SR-160F model, since Al was able to confirm the hole spacing was right. So I get my parts in, and in the process I find out that while the hole spacing is a match, there is a notch that does not line up. Not sure if this only affects the 2nd Gen chassis or if it also applies to the 3rd Gen that has the SR-1000F throw off as well (never had any of those), but it could be a possibility I guess. I'll detail what I did here to show how i easily fixed the issue, and go this up and running!

Here's the notch I am referring to:

I mounted the SR-160F in place, all the holes lined up perfectly and the nuts for the bolts fit perfectly. However, the throw off lever would not move. The notch was just slightly off so that it was putting pressure on the lever, as shown below:

Some work with a Dremel and a round file, and the notch now looks like this:





I know it's not perfect/symmetrical, but with the limited Dremel bits I have this was a smooth as I could get right now. I plan to get more bits and on my next head change even it out some more and get it as smooth as possible.

Thanks guys! I am very pleased with the results. This is a top quality throw off, the action is smooth and it firmly "clicks" into place. It would take a good hit to accidentally disengage the snares.

I am also quite happy with how the super hoops sound and feel. They really opened up this snare. I find the die cast are great for a focused, sharp, defined sound, and the superhoops are more open and softer. It's subtle to be sure, but I can hear the differences. The good thing is I now have both die cast and superhoops for this drum, so I can change out as desired. I would recommend this to anyone for their snare(s), swapping them can make it feel and sound like a "new" snare with very little investment, and then you can swap out when you need each particular sound!
