  • 15 ply shell owners?

Is there anyone who uses one of these in a custom snare? I heard a Spaun snare in a 4x14 size on the tube and it was awesome! I was looking at building my own piccolo snare and this shell had cut, clarity and tone IMO instead of the thin crack associated with this size.

P.S while checking YouTube I looked up a 50 ply snare and it was horrendous!

I wouldn't bother making a snare that shallow with 15 plies simply because at that point, it loses body. When you make a snare wall or shell wall thicker, you are increasing the pitch and making it seem tighter and poppier. If you want a deeper snare like a 6-8" depth I would say it makes more sense and will give you a great, well rounded snare. If you utilize a thinner shell for a shallower snare, it will retain more body instead of straight projection and volume. In my experience, body and tone from a shell help carry the projection further out into the crowd and room whereas just projection and crack sounds loud in front or around the immediate vicinity of the snare.

If you are going to do a 14x4, do an 8-10 ply shell (much cheaper too).

I'm working on 2 new snares using Kellers' new 9 ply magnum maple vss shells. A 14x5 and a 14x8. They measure out at 10mm. Pretty close to the older 15 ply shells. Can't wait to here what they sound like..

This might be my ticket! Have to see it done up and hear it sing! I didn't realize that those shells were so thick.

The 9 ply magnums are thick (10mm). I too can't wait to hear what it sounds like. The blue is nice but is only the base color. The final finish will be different but REALLY nice! Thanks for the comments!
