  • Metal Snare recommendation?

Hey friends! I recently sold my MCX kit (I don't really need it anymore) as well as my 402 Supra (can't tolerate Ludwig's garbage HW and am not about to pay $100+for a Dunnett throw). I'm leaning toward DW brass/bronze/copper/aluminum. I'm set on the material but am open to other brand suggestions. Budget is around $750 and the snare must have quality HW. I'd love to hear your suggestions. My contenders so far are:

    -DW knurled bronze
    -DW Copper/copper with copper HW
    -Pearl Ultracast
    -DW Brass

You mean about $600 more haha? Not sure if it's worth spending THAT much on a snare...

We'll be releasing our seamless spun copper very soon. Maybe that would be interesting for you ...

VERY interesting, though aren't the seamless shells even more expensive?

My TKO (brass) is the best metal drum I've played. Yup, expensive but if your budget allows, well worth it. Have you looked at the Tama Starphonic lineup? Well made, great sounding drums coming in at a price point a little under the DWs you're considering.

Those Tama's do seem to have a lot of features and value. I'm going to listen to some sound samples.

Check these out too! Very good drums for the price. I don't own one yet but what I've seen and heard.....it's an excellent drum!

I can vouch for his work, I am the owner of one of his Dardanelli cast bronze shells. An amazing drum. Quality crafted, affordable price for a cast bronze.

My vote would be for the Ultracast. They’re great snares if you can find one used or NOS. I was lucky enough to snag a new one about a month and a half ago. No complaints! Lots of crack with a slightly woody tone and a wide tuning range.

The Ultracast are hard to find these days but a great drum if you can find one - crab it.

Since the Ultracast has been brought up, is the Hybrid Exotic cast aluminum snare just a re-branded Ultracast with new hardware or is the shell different?

If the shell is the same, people looking for an Ultracast have this as an option as well.

The Ultracast and Hybrid Exotic are both 3mm aluminum shells with the Hybrid Exotic shell being 3mm shell at center and 5mm at top edge. But yes, both are very similar.

I believe the TT sig shell is 3mm with 5mm at edges.
