  • Ebay score! Does anyone here at Pearl recognize this snare?

So I just won this drum at eBay. The seller did not know what it was. He had no idea about the type of wood or number of plies, so this was a bit of a gamble. But, I won it for $212, so I think the gamble is pretty dang good. Does anyone at Pearl happen to recognize the wood? Or build? I think the hoops maybe 3rd party. But I think it looks like Rosewood or Walnut.

Here are 2 pictures that the seller uploaded.

I saw that. I totally forgot or else I would have bid too. Looks like it could be some aftermarket lugs and hoops? None of it looks familiar but thats still a pretty good price

looks like it's mostly all after-market, but it could be a special limited edition pearl shell....

Are snare side hoops on the batter side? I can see a couple of holes.

It will be neat to see this after you disassemble it and show us some better pics. The tubes do not look like the current Pearl TB-55, but they may be their older version. They were designed differently years ago, before they started using the rubber gaskets. I have an old broken one. With incomplete information, I would guess that it is a maple shell with walnut finish (stain on the maple)... but that's a shot in the dark. Nice score!

Where are these holes? I can't seem to see them. Holes in the shell or in the rim?

EDIT: I just saw them. That looks like an aftermarket rim, so anything is possible I think.

Yes. Kind of why I took a gamble on this. Worst case, this is a 3rd party shell that someone put a masterworks badge on. I really think the chances of that are slim, but still, it's possible. That is why i'm hoping someone from Pearl might be able to ID or recognize that shell. I have the serial #, but I heard that Pearl doesn't really keep them on file. Depending on the quality and condition of the tube lugs, I may be in the market for a new set. God... could you imagine that snare with gold tube lugs and rims? Or black even. Actually, I think black might look better.

I believe I have read somewhere on this forum that the Masterworks serial # are the only ones that Pearl keep. So if you have the serial #, I would definately contact Pearl and enquire information about this drum.

When you get the drum, take close-ups of the shell. We will be able to determine if it is a Pearl shell, number of plies, and make an educated guess on the types of wood used in the plies.

yes, I plan to do this. According to the eBay, it could be here as early as Thursday. Everything I get from eBay seems to come from the west coast.

I believe those are Pearl lugs. I would bet money thats a real Masterworks and you got an amazing deal.

I have chatted with Al P. He forwarded my request for info over to the folks at the factory overseas. Hopefully, they will be able to provide some info at some point. In the meantime, he had this to say: "The tension rods with hook claws look like T062F (claw was DC-438) which we did on limited run of Sensitone snares in 1997-1998."

Who knows. Maybe this is an early era masterworks snare from one of the first few years of the Masterworks line. I do not remember what year the Masterwork line was introduced.

                              Yup:

BK, does the shell have the scarf joints on the plys? That tends to be a telltale Pearl sign.
