  • Ultracast with SR-017 Strainer?

I just pulled the trigger on an "excellent condition" 6.5 depth Ultracast for a good price. It does have what appears to have the SR-017 strainer/butt instead of the SR-1000. Is this an earlier model or did someone switch the strainers? Either way I am very excited. It also has different snares (022 I think) that will likely replace back to spec. It should here this week.

In the 2003 General Catalog, the Ultracast is listed as having the SR-017 strainer.

I own or have owned drums and cymbals made by every major manufacturer. My go-to kit is a DW Collectors series set.

Sweet! Thanks. What does it say about snare wires. I think the ones now have "C Type" Pearl Ultrasound. I read somewhere that earlier Ultracasts may have used "I Type" Ultrasound snares. ???

Pearl Brazil has pretty much every Pearl catalog and flyer available for download. Check it out!

Nice. I read the first 2001 Ultracast ad and it says it came with S-022NU snares, so mine are either exactly those or close. That site is going slow for me now. Curious as to what other snares came on Ultracasts through the years and why. I can 't wait to get this snare!! Haha. Livin' the dream.

Congrats and a great snare choice. I find the UC to be Pearl's best sounding and performing snare, it does everything well. It has the dry nature of an Acrolite but with the ability to achieve a cleaner and more clear tone. Rimshots are explosive and have great character, not just an ear-pop but with structure and tone. The hardware is simple and functional, no frills, just the way it's suppose to be..... Enjoy!!!

Thanks, man. I'm thinking I may end up selling my matching Masters MCX snare. I have a feeling I will like the Ultracast that much. I I'm not a good hoarder. Haha.

It looks like ultracasts started with Pearl S-022, then Pearl Ultrasound "I" type and then "C "type which have looser wires in the middle. I think I'll go for the "I" type when I replace the S-022 snares that are on there now. Now that I think about it, I might just transfer the 16 strand Puresound Custom off my MCX! Ha!

I've "rolled" a lot of snare wires on my 5" UC and found that I prefer the Puresound 16s above all the others including the OEM. It doesn't take well to the big 30 and 42 strands, the snare beds a not excessively wide. The 16s give you more shell tone and since it's a fairly loud drum to begin with, you won't miss the added wires. I had a 6.5 for a few years but was stolen at a gig. The sound difference between the depths was no surprise, very consistent tone, just a bigger and thumper sound. I also rolled a lot of heads and found the UC is best with simple single plies... G1, Ambassidor, TC, etc all work very well.

That's a painful loss. !!!!!!!! I really like the 16's on my Masters. I think the snares are louder than the regular 20 strand S-022's, but the drum sound is more open. I generally prefer single ply snare batters, but occasionally flirt with a dot or double ply. I can't wait to get this thing.

When you change a head, let me know if it is a tight fit (if you don't mind). I just bought a 14x5 Ultracast. When I changed the head, it was a tight enough fit that I thought the drum must be out of round. I checked it and found that it was not.

Will do. What kind of head gave you a problem? New drum? Was the head you took off a tight fit too? I tracked down an Aquarian Texture Coated w/ Power Dot locally, so I'm going with that and a Remo Ambassador snare side. Some people have had issues in general with Aquarian heads being too snug/small, but I think that was mostly with wrapped kits. The reso Amb is easier to find, but after consdieration I think it has a crisper sound than the Aquarian equivelent and thats what I want.

Thanks for looking into it. The snare was used for a clinic but still classified as "new". The Remo Coated Emperor (that was removed) and the Evans PCRD (that was put on) were both tight. They both sounded fantastic, but I didn't know if this is common for the Ultracast series.

I just got a new Ultracast and there is also a very snug fit for the head. I was worried it will scratch the finish, but it does sound amazing!

Mine is also snug! i was just changing the heads. The Emperor X I took off fits normal. I also bought an Aquarian American Vintage snare side reso (slightly larger hoops size for vintsge or out of round drums) and it also fit normal. I put the Aquarian Texture Coated with Power Dot on anyway for now. Gotta go finish now.

Edit: The American Vintage snare side wouldn't fit inside the hoop! Ha! Thats a new one. Decided to take the batter off and return both. Looks like I'm drifting back to Remo....at least with this snare. Hopefully they will fit better! I
