  • Aluminum Tama SLP

    I bought a 14x5 Tama SLP Super Aluminum snare a few months ago, and man, I love it. I had been "visiting" this snare drum at the local GC for a couple of months - I kept coming back to it. I'd try other snares at different shops, and this one kept talking to me. It has the perfect "rock tone" that my band needs. Finally, it went on sale, and I grabbed it at a good price.

    When recording, it's great, because it has this very singular tone, and few weird overtones, making EQ a breeze. I also really like the tone we're getting on recordings (using a beta 57a, my favorite snare mic). Perhaps the only downside... It is LOUD AS HE\\, which makes it terrible for rehearsing. I pretty much reserve it for recording and gigs, and use one of my other snares for rehearsals (my 12x7 slingerland maple is a great rehearsal snare...quiet, nice tone).

    You can never, ever have enough snare drums.

    I love aluminium as a snare shell option. Never owned one myself, but a band we used to gig regularly back in the day had one (same as the one below) I'd often borrow, and I always found it so easy to tune and get the sound from I wanted. More so than my brass snare at the time.

    I nearly bought this one the other day;

    But it got pulled from sale (probably sold) while I was umming and arring about it...

        That would have been one nice snare score!!! I love Pearl's drums and hardware from that era That's my favorite years of their stuff!

          Mine too. Don't get me wrong, the Masters stuff, Session, Masterworks, Ref's - all lovely drums. But I just have a penchant for the older late 80s early-mid 90s stuff; hardware, snares, kits, etc.

          That particular snare has been on my want list for a good few years now. But I've not yet found one in the condition and price range I'm willing to go to. Oh well, all good things come to those who wait

            The Pearl Prestige Custom or CZX is still my dream drums set. I have just never had the funds on the rare occasions I found a good set of them for sale but so is life. I love all the newer series too, they are all great and I will most likely end up with a Masters set in the next few years....it is the closest thing they currently have to what I like most.

              Me likey. This looks like a cool snare. I agree - my SLP aluminum is SUPER easy to tune, and has such a "primary" tone to it. For a relatively "rookie", "noob" (etc.) engineer like me, having "well behaved" drums is great. I'm still learning how to mix, and the fewer weird frequencies I have to deal with, the better. The SLP aluminum is as close to a "plug n play" snare as I've had. Getting good tones just requires putting a mic next to it, and pressing "record". Love it.

                I've heard aluminium referred to as the "birch of metals" for drums. Birch is renowned for it's "EQ ready" tonal qualities, and I think AL sits up there with it as the "EQ ready" metal variant.

                BTW, why are there still no pics? Pretty much rule number one of new gear threads is to post pics...!
